the question is not whether God still does miracles (even though He does).

the question is whether Scripture ever gives us permission to treat the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit as a temporary first-century phase. by @_josh_farrell

The Old Testament is full of mercy.
The New Testament has plenty of judgement.
To have an actual relationship with God we should know how He has actually revealed Himself. by @_josh_farrell

Christianity does not answer evil with a philosophical lecture from a safe distance. It answers it with a scarred Savior on a cross. by @_josh_farrell

A hostile group from an apostate city rejecting God’s prophet is a very different story than God murdering toddlers over a bald joke. Read the actual text. by @_josh_farrell

This was your government mandated October Halloween post

And here’s some awesome stories of how Christians should face spiritual warfare:

St. Antony deliberately went into the desert, a place associated with demons. When confronted by terrifying apparitions in one story he said: “I belong to Christ, so do whatever God has actually permitted you to do.”

St. Martin of Tours was cutting down a tree that locals believed was sacred to a pagan god. When they challenged him to stand directly where it would fall, he agreed, made the sign of the cross, and the tree fell the other way.

St. Boniface walked up to Thor’s Oak while pagans stood nearby expecting their god to strike him dead. He chopped it down anyway, then used the wood to build a church.

St. Benedict arrived at Monte Cassino where there was still a temple and altar to Apollo. He destroyed the idol, tore down the altar, cut down the sacred grove, and built Christian chapels on the same ground.

Justin Martyr wrote that ordinary Christians cast out demons in the name of Jesus.

Tertullian was so confident in Christ’s authority that he basically challenged pagans: bring someone possessed by a demon to a Christian and see what happens.

The saints did not disbelieve in demons.

They simply believed in Jesus more. by @_josh_farrell

Recording human depravity is not endorsing it. The Bible contains horrific stories of violence because it refuses to sanitize reality, not because it approves of them. by @_josh_farrell

The point is not that God is the oldest thing in the universe. He is the reason the universe exists right now.

Aquinas’s Five Ways are not about a chain of dominoes stretching back in time. They are about reality running on borrowed existence this second, and why derivative reality ultimately requires a non-derivative source. by @_josh_farrell

Six fiction books that shaped how I see the world, and the core idea behind each:

1. The Man Who Was Thursday (Chesterton): Order is more surprising and miraculous than chaos.

2. The Napoleon of Notting Hill (Chesterton): You cannot love humanity in the abstract if you refuse to love particular places and people.

3. The Great Divorce (Lewis): Hell is refusing joy, and our desires do not need to be destroyed; they need to be redeemed.

4. The Hobbit (Tolkien): Leaving your comfort zone because the world is dangerous, beautiful, and worth seeing.

5. The Divine Comedy (Dante):
Reality is not centered on punishment; it is centered on the Love that moves the sun and stars.

6. Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky): The agony of spiritual death, and the promise of resurrection. by @_josh_farrell
