and even if - By chance, in early 2024, I came across the well-known, at least ambiguous Capricho “The Sleep/Dream (sueño) of Reason Produces Monsters” several times and, unable to get it out of my head, improvised on it in a painting. This initial exploration led me to a long, now (for the time being) completed engagement with Goya’s series of works. The series “dreams are your reality” now comprises 20 works ranging in size from the originals to 250cm x 150cm.

After a quick initial sketch on canvas based on the etching, the painting undergoes a constant transformation during the painting process until I feel I have achieved a certain balance between complexity and simplicity in terms of composition, color, and symbolic content.

What fascinates me about Goya’s Caprichos is the artistic mélange of social criticism and self-placement, satire, humor, and - often bitter - seriousness, as well as the associated ambiguity of the sheets, which is usually further intensified by the titles. In this way, Goya’s Caprichos constantly revisit the currently widely discussed phenomenon of the intertwining of reality and fiction, of different levels of reality.

In the painting process, by emptying the motif of concrete figurativeness and reducing or intensifying the composition to more or less abstract forms and surfaces, I arrive at an adaptation of the respective work that feels right to me. Working with Goya’s often unusual compositions and translating them into painting, playing with colorfulness, the materiality of paint, and the painting surface (e.g. through differently structured primers) is particularly appealing.

While painting, the titles for the works emerge, which in a loose, ambiguous way refer both to the respective Capricho and to a possible location in the present day.

The work in this post - “and even if” - refers to the Capricho “Nadie se conoce”.

In the little video you can hear a part of my fleamarketkeyboard version of the standard “My Silent Love” by Dana Suesse, which may or may not fit perfectly.
