We saw @loatheasone @fleshwater.fm and @attempted.martyr at the @fillmorenc

Incredible all around. Prostitute opened and did what you’d want an opener to do: walk up and swing the bat full speed. Full contact no pads.

Their “post-punk Arab rock” fits. Melodically, Texturally, their sound isn’t like anything you’ve heard together before. The drummer had chops plucked straight out of a jazz conservatory (or the Detroit underground scene… maybe both). The bassist had a Stonehenge presence (pictured here).

Fleshwater has a solid fan base on hand. I had dabbled in their discography but not enough to know the words. They fed off the energy, at one point the guitarist told the crowd “I want all of you crowd surfing *points to security* put these motherfuckers to work”
Tuff work, big dawg.

Their sound orbits the Gazecore sound (think mid-recent Deftones) but I’d place them closer to Heavy UpTempShoegaze. The singer sounds great in recordings and live… as long as I protected my ears to hear her clearly…

Their FOH mixer didn’t adjust any volume. From what I could tell he only adjusted the guitar high end EQ a little but to be honest the volume made it hard to enjoy their music. I turned to Kellie at one point: she and others around us were covering their ears too.

This band played a fabulous set: reckless abandon, get rowdy, high energy hardcore but with a soaring voice. The audio tech just made it hard to stay in it.

This is Loathe’s FOH sound architect. And his toys (see also rubber ducky and shark and foot).

This show was the best mixed of any show I’ve ever seen. Ever. Clear at all times, washed and resonant all the way to 2 grit sandpaper and chugged to hell and back. Never lost the balance and clarity.

After a few other fans bugged him for the set list I got a chance to thank and congratulate him: total pro, humble and kind he said “thanks, I had to study the fohk out of it” (Liverpool band, remember).

Their set list can be found online, but it flowed seamlessly. They have one full ambient album out, so it stands to reason how they could fill transitions and make it develop the plot. I almost cried during Block of Flats (pictured here, wildly effective taken in The Fillmore Charlotte by @_jweix_

#louderthanlife day 4 in the MF BOOKS. I saw Toadies, Animals As Leaders, The Pretty Wild, Emery, Pile of Corpses, Atreyu, Alexisonfire, The Mars Volta, mastodon, locked shut, Aviana, Underoath, Gojira. RIP to my sunglasses (lost to the wall of death during Aviana), my voice is super gone, but there’s absolutely no way I’d want to ever miss this festival again. I’m grateful for the opportunity to travel and see bands I’ve followed for years (and decades). #louderthanlife day 3 in the books. We saw P.O.D., Tom Morello (his son played with him: amazing. He played Killing in the Name Of: my face pictured, it was amazing), Bilmuri (incredible, and I caught THE pick), Halestorm, some of Ice Nine Kills, Dance Gavin Dance, and Baby Metal. It was a zillion degrees again but we wouldn’t have changed a single part of the day. Hog: Cranked. by @_jweix_

We saw Get Scared, Coheed and Cambria, Sleeping With Sirens (see crowd surfing), We The Kings, Loathe (only the one song before the rain evacuations… more on this later), The Used, A Day To Remember, Taking Back Sunday (magical rain set), Kel saw My Chemical Romance and I saw Haywire and… Knocked Loose. #louderthanlife day 1 in the books. We saw Machine Head, Emmure, Alice Cooper, ERRA, and Hot Mulligan (I bought the setlist!). All incredible live. Two pits, no injuries, it’s hot AF out here. Kel looked so cute by @_jweix_

Drink plenty of water. Oof these were tough. But my regular lifts got a little stale. These were fun to do outside but not fun at all.
