POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The feeling of sitting with an audience and watching In Kind with them for the first time is a moment I’ll never forget. Thank you to everyone @boonedocsfilmfest for your love and for your belief in this film. Thank you to the most incredible folks who brought this piece to life, whether that was helping with filming, advising on story, sharing your music, or giving me a place to stay while traveling. Thank you to the @woodlandharvest crew for loving this world wide open every day.

This story makes me hopeful, and I think we’re all in desperate need of that these days. Can’t wait to keep sharing it. 🤍 taken in Boone, North Carolina by @_katherinegunning

One of the best things about being a student is that you get to work on whatever story your heart desires with few boundaries. When I started planning for my terminal project to finish my degree a little less than a year ago and I was encouraged to dream about what I might like to focus on, I remember it took only moments for me to decide that I would do whatever it took to highlight my community back in Western North Carolina. I wanted to give love back to the place that has nurtured me through so much. That, and I just really wanted to work and hang out with my friends.

I’m so thrilled that the two films that came out of that adventure, In Kind (featuring @woodlandharvest ) and Appalachian Understory (featuring @amandaheldopelt ) will both premiere at Boone Docs Film Festival on February 28th. I can’t wait to be there in person to share these stories I am so honored to be a part of with the community they were made by (and for).

If you’re close by, I hope you’ll come through! Both screenings are free (Appalachian Understory will be in the "After Helene" block and In Kind will be in the "Emerging Filmmakers" block), and you can get details/tickets @boonedocsfilmfest .

See you soon, Carolina. 🤍

Baby’s first demo reel 🥲🙈

This represents little snippets of my work from the last year (and a few sneak peaks of projects I’m still working on). There are moments I look at it and want to pick it apart—there’s still so much room to grow. But at the same time, I also can’t help but feel insane joy to be doing work I’ve always dreamed of. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude to work with such incredible people and meaningful stories. After years of feeling out of place, these days I’ve been right at home.

Thank you to everyone who has been cheering me on and blowing me away with your support and love. I am one lucky duck. 💛 taken in Portland, Oregon by @_katherinegunning

A short meditation on late summer and the state of things, featuring the late Joanna Macy.

This quote was from a podcast that originally aired on On Being on June 24, 2019. It re-aired on July 22nd, 2025, shortly after Joanna passed on. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time.

I gathered this footage over the last few weeks, and some of these plants are already gone for the season.

It’s all so precious. 🤍

Special thanks to @johnlucasmusic , @daniellealyssak , June and Lucy for being stars, in this little film and in so many other ways. ✨ by @_katherinegunning

“Follow your heart” might sound like some tired, cliché advice. But those words have come to life for me again through this experience. Follow your heart when the life you’re living doesn’t fit. Follow your heart when you have the opportunity to do something that feels scary but exciting. Follow your heart when you find people that help you become more of yourself and love the world more deeply.

Turns out, that little stirring inside you is wise. I recommend listening to it when you can.

Thank you to my friends at @uosojc and all the dear people in my life who have loved me and cheered for me on this wild, winding path. I’m forever changed, and grateful beyond words. 🫶🏼🦆 taken in Eugene, Oregon by @_katherinegunning

While I am so grateful to get to spend so much time in the filmmaking world these days, portrait work will always be my first love. It’s such intimate, relational work, and I feel so honored anytime someone invites me to collaborate with them in this way.

I especially love that portraits are often needed when someone is releasing some kind of dream into the world—in this case, it’s Mikey’s first book, Eulogy of a Rainbow Trout. Getting to see my friend start dabbling in poetry to becoming a published author has just been so unbelievably beautiful. I’m so proud of him. He’s truly one of the most talented people I know, I’m so excited to see him start to get some of the flowers he deserves. 💐 taken in Seattle, Washington by @_katherinegunning

When I went to film In Kind last June, a group of friends of @woodlandharvest were visiting to get away from the noise and enjoy unplugged time together in nature. I am so thankful to them for allowing me to hang out and tag along on some of their adventures, and for being so willing to be part of the film—they’re just the sweetest humans. While I was out there, I kept finding myself saying “this feels like summer camp!” Eventually, “Queer Camp” became the fun shorthand for it. And now, I am so excited to see that it’s becoming a real, official event that’s happening at the farm in two week long sessions at the end of July! My heart exploded when I saw they pulled some frames from our film to create the camp poster.

I hope you apply, friends! Link is in my bio. I can’t recommend these lovely people enough. Go enjoy some sacred land and community connection. taken in West Jefferson, North Carolina by @_katherinegunning

My first Super 8 film! Portland is so magical in the springtime, so I loved getting to document it last year with such a special medium.
