Who is Katie Howie?! I'm so glad you asked!

A 5th generation St. Paulite, Katie grew up Katie McNamara in the Union Park neighborhood in a beautiful old home with a blue cat-slide roof and massive oak trees in both the front and back yards. Her early years were full of slow living and Wonder, which laid the foundation for how she lives her life and runs her business today.

Katie has always loved learning. She graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall High School and has a BA in psychology and women's studies from The University of St Thomas. During the early to late 2000s, Katie cut her teeth working in retail marketing at the St. Paul institution Bibelot. It was there that Katie learned she adored social media and fell in love with working at a small, community centered, woman-owned business.

After the birth of her first daughter, Nora, and about a year before her second daughter, Annie, arrived in 2013, Katie decided it was time to take her side hustle of portrait photography and make it Her Work. Katie saw a hole in the market for reasonably priced, authentic portraits and the community enthusiastically welcomed her.

Similarly, the home styling leg of Katie's business kicked-off in the spring of 2020 (no harder time to start something!) because she again noticed a lack of mid-range home styling options. Katie knew she could bring a unique vintage modern aesthetic to clients and she's been booking projects ever since.

Katie is happiest when she's able to use art to express how she experiences the world. Whether that expression takes the form of a client styling project, a series of family photos, or is as simple as setting a beautiful table for her own family: It's all art. And it all fills Katie's cup✨

What is an authentic portrait session?

Portraits with me are surprisingly simple, and that's what makes them special.

In a world full of filters, AI and elaborate setups, I push back. Instead, I prefer to photograph my clients in their homes, in nature or in my open air studio, using only natural light.

It's my goal to connect with each person that I'm photographing in a meaningful way. I hope that puts them at ease, so that I can capture real smiles and genuine interactions. Traditional shots (everyone looking at the camera and smiling) are always central to my shoots, but I especially enjoy little, stolen moments: sweet glances, giggles, even just tucking hair behind an ear - real moments of authenticity make my heart, and shutter, flutter.

If the way I work sounds like a fit, or of interest, let's chat. I'd love to bring my aesthetic to your next family portrait session. I'd love to make Art with you!

I have been slow styling my entire life, I just didn't know that it had a name.

The term slow interiors encompasses a more considered and thoughtful approach to how we decorate. It's not done in one fell swoop. Rather, it's done over an extended period of time as your budget, time and energy allow.

Slow styling is not made for social media with the snap of your fingers and it can't be contained in a 15 second reel. Slow styling is however made for real life. For real budgets. And for real families.

A slowly decorated home is about creating a space that works for you and the people and pets you share your home with. Ideally, it's a space in which you can retreat from the hustle and noise of the outside world, prioritising relaxation and enjoyment.

If you think slow styling could add to your life let's chat. I'd love to share more about my philosophy and process.
