We are pleased to present an upcoming ‘BEHOLDING BLACK MIRRORS: A Solo Exhibition by Keabetswe Seema’ (@_keaseema).

Seema’s work positions viewing as a reflective encounter—inviting audiences into a space where perception is mirrored back onto the self, the other, and the act of looking itself.

#Interview with Seema (b. 1999), born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. The artist explores themes of “Afro-surrealism”, “spirituality”, and the “matriarchal family”, as well as the politics of the “Black female body” and “identity”, working across monotypes, photography, collage, sculpture, sound, and mixed media.

Her practice engages the “matriarchal family”, “Black feminist thought”, and “futurity”, approached through an “Afro-surreal” framework in which “strangeness” and “distortion” operate as active conceptual forces. Through processes of “cutting”, “mending”, “holding”, “deconstructing”, and “reconstructing”, Seema builds layered visual narratives that reflect ongoing cycles of formation and reformation.

Rooted in the “post-apartheid”, “post-colonial South”, her work interrogates questions of “identity” and “representation”, particularly in relation to “Black female subjectivity” and its positioning within social and cultural spaces. Her practice considers how dominant systems of power may be disrupted, and how alternative ways of seeing and understanding might emerge.

One step closer to my dream. I told myself in Jan that if I could just make it to this show then maybe I won’t give up on making art. I guess we gonna keep this art thing going ✨🧚🏾

Beholding Black Mirrors ⿊镜之观, 2026

Last week was the last week to see the work I completed in Shanghai. The time I spent there shifted a lot of things for me not only practice wise but personally. I learnt a lot about how important it is to keep the wonder and to dream as if you were never introduced to limitation. Every late night or early morning thinking, dreaming, contemplating, rehearsing, I felt like everything was so final. Like what I made was the end and I had to give it everything or that I wouldn’t get another opportunity like this. Something about working in that was a trauma response to being the chosen one. The one who has to make sure it all works out because so much is riding on your success. But now that I’ve had time to reflect, I realise that my wonder does not have to be final, it can be a continuous negotiation of becoming. That maybe it doesn’t have to feel like the end. But these ends start feeling like these beginnings taken in No.41 Hengshan Road Shanghai by @_keaseema

New work created during my residency with @newfutures.iofc curated by @isadoracanela and @juji________ . A special thanks to @mrlegacyjones , @vickymazzia and @therohitvalecha for facilitating a space that does not just aim to support and care for artists across the global but actively participates in the transformation of lives. 🤍 Very few times do you enter an environment where you feel seen and welcomed in a way that does feel like the other shoe is about to drop! Thank you 💯🧚

To all the residents artists, you have changed the world! Until we meet again.

What does it mean to be labelled a “black spot”? And what does it mean for a black spot to appear upon white paper? Is the black spot understood as an intrusion, a mark that must be removed, erased, displaced in order for the surface to remain intact?

In the early 1980s, the apartheid government intensified the enforcement of the Native Land Act of 1913 against the people of Bakwena Bo Mogopa, forcibly removing them from Swartrand, a fertile and deeply ancestral landscape. On 14 February 1984, police arrived in two buses and 85 truck-schools, churches and homes were demolished, and the community was loaded onto trucks and transported to Pachsdraai, a barren landscape. The violence of this removal was not simply geographical. It ruptured an intimate and interdependent relationship between people, land, ancestors and ecology. Significantly, these events coincided with the discovery of mineral deposits in Bethanie, North West, raising the question of where dispossession ends and
extraction begins.

As a descendant of this royal lineage, I have begun to return to the history of my people through fragments, remnants and traces—attempting to read what remains in the wake of displacement. This installation marks the beginning of an ongoing investigation into the ways in which political and economic agendas of extraction produce fragmented communities, disrupted ecologies and
fractured relationships to place.

Due to popular demand, we are pleased to announce that ‘BEHOLDING BLACK MIRRORS: A Solo Exhibition by Keabetswe Seema’ (@_keaseema) has been extended through September 30.

The archive has played an influential role in Keabetswe Seema’s work. Images of her grandmother, aunt, and mother as children have made their way into her practice, drawn from the family archive and incorporated into her work.

The themes of the “matriarchal home” and growing up surrounded by strong women influence her practice, positioning these women as the “agents” and “protagonists” in her work. Their identities remain fluid, constantly shifting and becoming conflated, whether as male or female.

Seema hopes that audiences can experience a different understanding of what it means to be a “Black, female South African woman” through her work. If her work offers an introduction to this experience for the first time, she is happy to do so.
