Pre-Buddhist Shivlingum-Yoni plinth at the Bayon Wat, Cambodia. Lingum removed during the Hindu to Buddhist conversion of the kingdom, leaving only the yoni or divine feminine element.

Bangladesh is a nation in the midst of a revolution. What began as a student-led uprising in July of 2024 quickly grew into a pro-democracy rebellion that overthrew the long-standing, authoritarian government.

A key moment in the transformation of the protests into a fully-fledged revolt was the massacre of hundreds of protesters by police, under orders from the autocratic former government. During the ensuing chaos a large number of police stations were burned down, and their weapons looted. The vast majority of the police force nationwide was effectively dissolved, and many menial police tasks, such as traffic control, are now carried out by the army, the navy, and even the coastguard.

The rebellion is proudly considered by many to be the first Gen-Z led revolution in history, and like many civil movements in the country's troubled history, women have been at the front lines of protests, opening a period of unrest, uncertainty, and above all, change.
