Dinge queen:

With the recent news of Florida Legislation passing on the “Don’t say Gay bill” I think my art is important more now than ever. History always finds away to repeat itself.

During the late 1950s and mid-’60s, Florida’s legislation created a committee targeting vulnerable Americans not protected by
established laws. The John’s Committee was determined to target individuals suspected to be a Queer. Identifying as a gay individual was taboo, so the John’s Committee decided to publish the Purple Pamphlet. The Purple Pamphlet was a report on homosexuality in Florida, “ Benefiting every individual concerned with the moral
climate of the state”. Within the Purple Pamphlet was a glossary with derogatory categories of different queer identities.

Being black in the lgbt+ community at times can make you feel like there’s a shroud over your head. What isn’t talked about enough is the racism and colorim in the queer community. Let’s just make it very clear although me being black does make me a person of color, that doesn’t mean people of color face the same as discrimination as black peoples. Middle Eastern gay men, on average, will receive about 48 responses for every 100 messages they send, while white gay men will receive an average of 45. By contrast, Black gay men will receive about 36. These data illustrate that one’s race/ethnicity affects one’s romantic and sexual value in queer communities. And racism especially harms gay men of color. Often many races such as Asian, white, and latinX will say no blacks, and label it as just a preference. gay men post on their Grindr profiles such as “no blacks” or “white only.” Often, white men attempt to minimize the social harm of their overt racism by claiming their comments are merely preferences. But these so-called preferences cause significant harm. They can cause some queer men of color to feel undesirable, which in turn can pressure some queer men of color to lie about their racial/ethnic identity in order to attract attention. But as a queer black person, I will not be silenced. I am proud of who I am inside and out. Love is to unite us as one not dived us. When I decided to create the alone in oblivion series, I wanted to embrace my blackness in the queer community and my queerness in the black community. As a gay black man identity to me is more than just my sexuality, gender, or skin color. Identity is about expression and how you mold yourself into this world we all live in. At times it's hard being proudly gay in the black community, because black men are taught hyper-masculinity is the way to live. Instead of compassion, we are taught to lead with anger. In the queer community, black people are left to the side. It is sad to know that as someone who is proud of who they are you have no table to seat at, so you have to make your own table. There's so much racism in the queer community and there's so much homophobia in the black community. The color of my skin is the number one thing people hate around the world. It is taught to us through history. Any one and everyone that was darker no matter the race was perceived as lesser than. Sadly being the melanin rich group we are black people just can't help it. Our black beauty isn't celebrated in many cultures if not most. There's reports such as places in China where black people are being thrown out their homes. In India women are told they should bleach their skin. The list goes on sadly. But as a queer black person, I will not be silenced. I am proud of who I am inside and out. Love is to unite us as one not dived us. Inside the womb - It’s her body. Her voice. Her say. *disclaimer I do know I am a man, and no I don’t know the experience of women or child. But I do know where rights should be.* We put so much pressure on women to mold and act a certain way in order to get by in life, but we don’t do the same thing for men. We force girls to take birth control, but we don’t force men to. It’s odd women are the ones to have to always take further precautions to prevent pregnancy, but the only thing men have to do is use a condom. Male birth control is a thing, but it’s taboo. Vivarium: an enclosure, container, or structure adapted or prepared for keeping animals under seminatural conditions for observation or study or as pets; an aquarium or terrarium. Thanks to the coronavirus we have to take in the mantel of social distancing. At times it could seem we are trapped and there’s nothing we can do about it. So I thought of the concept of what if we are being observed? We are constantly in motion, and hard working, so now we have to form a new way of life.
