The streets of west London knew her foot steps before the rest of the world did… Beabadoobee (@radvxz) returned to west London to join me to make a film about returning home, what it means to belong & the places that shaped her. Such a pleasure making this film on behalf of @spotifyUK 💚

You Can’t Fly is an aesthete’s take on the portrait documentary, beginning with the chaotic aftermath of a hang gliding accident over the cliffs of Brighton and following Silverback Tarzan (@silverbacktarzan) (aka Matt Lewis) through his year-long recovery, and its impact on his family: Tara, his wife and Tia, his daughter. Gliding between candid glimpses into Lewis’ family life and characteristically indie, dreamlike snapshots of the natural world, You Can’t Fly takes on masculinity, trauma, neurodivergence, spirituality and growth through unapologetically authenticity. It is a courageously honest and beautiful window into the life of a wildly unique public figure who takes on the manosphere and disassembles it with “cosmic abundance” and good faith. It casts a light on the softness in the humanity of a half-caricature who meets his audience where they are and urges them to use their buzzing energy for the good of humanity.

Underneath a birch tree on a village green just outside of Brighton, I talked to director Josh Dylan (@_joshdylan) and producer Kit Patrick (@_kitpatrick) about their journey into making their first feature together. Their energy is wild and chaotic. Seemingly a bit of an odd pairing, Kit; a bit brash and overtly well-spoken, perfectly complimented by a smiley and boyishly giddy Josh. I was enamoured by them, reminding me of two horses who had just been let out of the box and into the wild, bouncing around and soaking up sunlight like the world was about to go dark. They ended every sentence with the word “cosmic”. Their passion was palpable and gravitational.

Our fourth feature is YOU CAN’T FLY, directed by @_joshdylan and produced by @_kitpatrick.

The film enters the extraordinary world of Matt Lewis, aka @silverbacktarzan , a 54 year old hang gliding philosopher with a cult following, grounded after a near fatal crash and determined to find his way back to the skies.

Funny, intimate and completely singular, it is a portrait of a man with an enormous personality, a wildly distinctive worldview and an almost cosmic commitment to living life on his own terms.

Silverback Tarzan himself will be joining us for a live Q&A after the screening, alongside the filmmakers.

Expect unexpected philosophy, huge energy and some serious cosmic vibes.

As today marks the day of the one and only Big Mike’s birthday I thought I would share the directors cut of “HOLD ME DOWN”.

It’s moments like these which makes me love my job. Cosmic settings, amazing people. Creating pure magic.

We shot this on Easter Sunday in Malibu, California last year. We shot 7 takes on 16mm and this was the second take we got in the can. Personally, this is my favourite from the day. The golden hour is too beautiful to not be seen by the world.

You Can’t Fly will have a special screening at @brightonrocksfilms this Saturday 20th June, at 16:00. There will also be a Q+A with @silverbacktarzan and the filmmakers @_joshdylan & @_kitpatrick.

There are still some tickets available, linked in the @youcantfly_film bio and the BRIFF website. Brighton locals, see you there. Everyone else, get down to the seaside!

You Can’t Fly, a documentary film from @joshdylan and @kitpatrick taking you inside the complex mind and vivid world of @silverbacktarzan will have its World Premiere at Raindance, Thursday 18th June, 16:00 at Vue Piccadilly. There will also be a Q+A with the filmmakers and Silverback Tarzan.

There are a few tickets left, grab one while you can! Tickets in the @youcantfly_film bio and on the Raindance website. If you can’t get a ticket to the premiere there will be another screening on Friday 19th June at 10:30am.
