I see His kindness
in the way it cuts like a knife
when spring bleeds into summer
and summer into fall

when tears blur rearview mirrors
with every place I leave behind
to follow my Father’s call

He never has me stay for long,
though I beg and plead
for a little more time

He gave me a heart that sticks
to canopied live oak trees
and chipped coffee cups that aren’t mine,

the back field in a December freeze,
kitchen tables I’ll never again see
and faded county line signs,

the walls of my kindergarten classroom,
the creak of a hand-built barn in July,
bare feet on hot driveway concrete

and in the kind eyes and quiet goodbyes
of everyone I’ve ever loved
and will ever meet

He doesn’t let me stay behind
to hold and harbor the memories
or watch them replay
and fade

Thanksgivings without empty chairs
“I love you”s scribbled in crayon
aching lungs in biting January air
summer naps after Sunday Mass
and Christmas of ‘08

But what He does is much kinder,
and I’ve learned to let it hurt
and bleed and ache and break

He lets me leave pieces of my heart behind,
stuck to the things and people and places
I can’t bear to let go
and can’t take

Because when I finally run into His arms,
I won’t have a whole heart to show Him
but I’ll be glad I gave every bit of it away

I’ll point to earth
and show Him everywhere my love still lives,
places my heart still beats
outside of where my body lays

So when I die,
you won’t find me beneath
the cracked South Texas clay

but in empty fields and ancient trees,
summer sunsets, fiddle riffs and crowded bars
August storms, sunlit churches and prayerful pleas
in the smile of every person
who’s laid claim to my heart,
in faces I haven’t seen in years
and in years that tore me apart

He’s kind to let me hurt for what I love,
to let my heart stay in places I can’t
I carve out each piece with smiles and tears and knives
and as long as it aches and breaks and bleeds,
I’ll know I’m alive
I can’t paint or dance or sing
but loving is a haunting art

And learning how He hurts to love us
though we can’t love Him the same
has always been the most important part by @_laurabethjames

Finally gonna be a West Texas girl!
