In February 2022, my mom was diagnosed with Stage 4A stomach cancer. The doctors told her she likely had about a year left to live. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my mom, it’s that she has never been defined by what others say is possible.

For the last four years, she has fought one hell of a battle. She defied every expectation and every timeline that was placed in front of her. Through surgeries, treatments, pain, and uncertainty, she kept going. Not only did she keep going, she kept living. She continued traveling the world, making memories, loving her family, showing her love to everyone by making the best Vietnamese dishes, and showing up for the people she cared about.

She is the most selfless, courageous, intelligent, resilient, and beautiful woman I have ever known. Every person who knows her has been touched by her kindness, her strength, and her willingness to put others before herself. The amount of stories I’ve heard about my mom from others only reminds me of how she truly has the biggest heart anyone could have ever known, and I hope I inherited at least a quarter of that heart of hers. She has spent her life caring for people as a mother of 3, a wife, a daughter, the oldest of 6, and a friend to many.

Something about her is that she loves flowers more than anyone. So now every time I see a flower, I’ll think of her, and I’ll know she’s right there with me (especially if it’s purple)

Mama, thank you for being the best mom there could ever be. You are my whole universe, and this is the hardest goodbye I’ll ever have to do. But, I promise to keep Tony, Quang, and ba in check, I promise to take as many pictures as I can, and I promise to make you proud every single day. I can’t wait to tell my future kids about how amazing their Bà Ngoại is. I love you to the moon and back. Thank you for everything. And I hope you and Ông Ngoại are collecting seashells on the beach again.

thank you to that random man who upgraded us to free front row tickets right before we went in, and thank you to the cameraman who put us on the jumbotron ten times. you guys made dreams come true last night. 5 year old me is SCREAMING. i will be telling my kids about this.
