My favourtie time is Matariki. 💌

I am sitting on the couch snuggled up in front of the fire, in the background Cleo Sol sings “things will get better” softly. The sound of the piano wrapped in velvet fills the room. I think of the year that has passed. I reflect on hardship... yet thoughts of gratitude prevail. I am grateful. For the opportunity to study, to work, to do what I love and share what I love.

During Matariki I make efforts to give. When I think of what giving back means. To me I think of pure love. “Pure love is a willingness to give without a thought of receiving anything in return” Photography gives me that opportunity. To share stories and get to know my community deeply.

Snuggled up on the couch, computer on my lap, the fire keeping me toasty & sifting through these images with a smile on my face I share these images I captured with you.

metamorphosis been on my mind

collapsing…

I was in the arts like fully in it. Passionate about art, artists, finding opportunities for young artists and being an artist. Now… Im in accounting studying economics & marketing & it looks wild bc it is. I laugh about it sometimes it makes sense to me - that’s all that matters right?!

still creating & leading with love. The only thing that has changed is how it comes alive. Tribulations have been part of this… ‘metamorphosis’ bc growth always costs something and has trade offs - comfort was mine. I think those phases are necessary if it refines you. Change matters because the marginal costs of remaining the the same is too high…

We wanted to share some background on Tangata Moana a project that I curated with help by my team at OMAC. The intention of bringing Māori traditional craft education to our communities through a series of free, accessible workshops. Tangata Moana ran for two weeks and we offered a Whakairo (carving) and Harakeke (flax) weaving run by talented Maori artists and kaumatua (elders). These workshops were hands-on and educational. ✨

The name Tangata Moana refers to “People of the Ocean” and the heart of this kaupapa is an open invitation for everyone from everywhere to participate and immerse themselves in the richness of Te Ao Māori. These workshops were designed to reframe how we engage with and view Māori culture especially as we step into Matariki the New Year through hands-on, community-based learning.

Alongside the workshops, we ran portrait session that visually celebrates us, all of us. The portraits taken were offered in conjunction with the workshops to highlight the beauty, strength, and pride within our communities. The blue lighting was intentionally chosen to reflect Wai – the theme for Matariki this year (with accordance to Auckland Council). Symbolising the life-giving waters that connect all of us across the Moana.

Our hope is that Tangata Moana inspires pride and a renewed way of seeing Te Ao Māori, especially for “Tangata Moana.”

To every person who came through the doors of OMAC, who sat, wove, carved, learned, laughed, and stood proudly for your portrait, thank you. 🫶🏾 Tangata Moana is for you. You are the reason this kaupapa breathes.

This project was a invitation to reconnect with Te Ao Māori — not just to observe, but to be immersed.

As we step into Matariki and reflect on the waters that connect us, I hope these moments and images remind you of your strength and your beauty you carry.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for being part of this.

2024 I <3 u

this was literally the end of my year.

I have 1 more album to deliver and I’m so excited to finish it up. Finishing my last shoot of the year was spesh! Reminded me why I loveeeee doing photography. But I told myself slow, steady and intentional is the goal for my photography this year. We are focusing on education and projects hehe 🥳

Osaka Castle has underground tunnels! These were used by soldiers to move around without being seen during battles. Some tunnels are still there, but you can’t visit them.

The castle we see today stands on the ruins of Toyotomi Hiseyoshi’s castle. This older castle was destroyed in a battle, and the current one was built by a new ruler after that.

The castle walls are made of huge stones. One of the biggest stones, called the “Octopus Stone,” weighs about 130 tons! These stones were brought from far away, showing how skilled the builders were.

Osaka Castle has been hit by lightning many times. In 1665, lightning caused a fire that destroyed the main tower, and it wasn’t rebuilt for many years. The version we see today was built using concrete in the 1900s.

During World War II, the area around Osaka Castle was used as a base by the Japanese army. Although bombs destroyed much of the surroundings, the main part of the castle stayed standing! taken in Osaka Castle 大阪城 by @_maliphoto
