A glimpse of week 1 at a new assignment. New city. New hospital. Same mission. ✈️ 🏥

There’s something special about walking into a hospital where you’ve never been, earning trust, and caring for patients when they need it most. Being a locums anesthesiologist has allowed me to serve communities across the country while experiencing places I may have never otherwise visited. Always grateful to make an impact, one community at a time. 👨🏾‍⚕️⚕️

A few things I wish someone had told me:

• It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Almost everyone does at first. It gets better.

• You don’t have to know everything on day one. Residency is where you’re supposed to learn.

• Ask questions. Asking a question takes less than 10 seconds. Fixing a mistake can take hours and in medicine can have lifelong or even fatal consequences.

• Be on time. People notice. Your reputation starts on day one.

• Don’t compare yourself to the intern who thinks they know it all. Confidence and competence aren’t always the same.

• Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know.” It’s far better and safer than pretending you do.

• Be kind to everyone. Nurses, techs, RTs, environmental services, transport. Everyone has something to teach you.

• It’s okay to feel for your patients. You’re human first. Caring is a strength, not a weakness.

• Own your mistakes. You WILL make them. Learn from them, apologize when needed, and move forward.

• Take care of yourself. Eat when you can, stay hydrated, get some sleep, and don’t feel guilty for taking care of yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

• Give yourself grace. Confidence comes with experience, repetition, and time.

There will be days when you question yourself. That’s normal. Keep showing up, keep learning, and trust the process. Before you know it, you’ll be the one giving this advice.

There are roughly 40,000+ anesthesiologists in the United States — and only 5.3% are Black, despite Black Americans making up 13-14% of the US population.

Though we are small, we are mighty and we show up excellently.

Spinal Anesthesia 101 💉 Today’s surgery: total knee replacement. Spinal anesthesia involves placing local anesthetic into the cerebrospinal fluid to provide numbness and pain control from the waist down during surgery, while helping reduce pain, nausea, and opioid use post-op.

Although not pictured, this is performed using strict sterile technique to reduce infection risk. 🦵🏾✨

⚠️Please watch this if you are planning to have surgery and undergo anesthesia 🛑

I’m here to remind you about the importance of NPO rules before surgery. Eating prior to surgery is THE most common cause of cancelled surgeries.

Most places actually recommend you don’t eat anything the night before—no solids for 8 hours, no clear liquids for 2. Eating too close to surgery can cause aspiration pneumonia, which is dangerous.

So stick to the rules, be honest, and if you have any doubts or questions, drop them below! And if you want another reel about other common pre-surgery tips, let me know! 👇
