When I first began my program in Film Directing at CalArts we had a project where we made Lumiere films. As I was visualizing what I would like to create I thought of my mother and how our lives differed.

At the age I was at the time she was already a mother of two. I decided I wanted to capture a moment in my memory of her preparing to do my sister and I’s hair in the kitchen, patiently waiting for the hot comb to warm and then again for it to cool.

She was forced to get a relaxer at a very young age and learned Black hair care through her refusal to relax ours (and many library books).

She loved our hair and learned our hair before she even went natural herself. Once she did go natural she poured that same love and knowledge into her own tresses.

This Lumiere was a meditation on love and patience through the sacred act that is Black hair care.

Music has always been a core part of who I am… it was honestly the reason I started my Instagram to share my original music. I changed course over time but lately I’ve been feeling my spirit called more and more to creating and sharing the music that has been placed on my heart. Today I thought of my 17 year old self and how she was more afraid than anything to do this performance of Like A Star by @corinnebaileyrae for the school BSU pageant but she did it anyway. This is the courage I want to call on as I continue to share my original music to this platform. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Screaming HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYY to my little brother the legend himself TJ aka Swoo aka Milkdud aka @yung.nito 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾✨✨✨I know many people view this day as solely a day of mourning, but the moment you entered the world on 9/11 it became a day of celebration too. In a crazy way it captures your essence of how even in the most difficult and depressing moments you bring so much joy and light. You might be younger than me, but you always teach me so much. You are so wise beyond your years spiritually and intellectually. It amazes me every conversation I have with you. You are smart asf and I’m glad you’re finally putting that brain to use in college. 😭😭🧠 You are literally the most gifted person I know and I am so so so proud of you and who you are. I know I haven’t been the perfect sister, but I couldn’t ask for a better brother. You inspire me & always push me to go deeper in understanding my faith and to always prioritize my purpose. I’m so grateful for you and the amazing person you are.
