Martin Niemƶller (1892–1984) was a prominent Lutheran pastor in Germany. In the 1920s and early 1930s, he sympathized with many Nazi ideas and supported radically right-wing political movements. But after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Niemƶller became an outspoken critic of Hitler’s interference in the Protestant Church. He spent the last eight years of Nazi rule, from 1937 to 1945, in Nazi prisons and concentration camps. Niemƶller is perhaps best remembered for his postwar statement, which begins, ā€œFirst they came for the socialists, and I did not speak outā€¦ā€ by @_marlonpeterson

Nine years ago I wrote Jay-Z an open letter. I questioned the gospel of ownership, the romance of accumulation, the way wealth starts to sound like freedom when the country has trained all of us to confuse the two.Last weekend I sat in Yankee Stadium and rapped along. The morning after, a writer I love posted that no Black man sells capitalism like Jay-Z. That the shit is ugly. I couldn’t dismiss it. I’d made a version of the same argument myself. What I couldn’t say back is that I’ve since crossed the line I drew. I have a revenue floor now. I rent. I have children. I think about what I leave them when I’m gone. I am trying to build something durable with the very tools I critique. My 2017 letter ended: ā€œYeah, maybe I should be addressing this letter to me.ā€Nine years later I understand that line more than I did when I wrote it.New essay. The concrete jungle won today. This is the first time I've equated the power of music with the power of sports. Both are able to direct peoples bodily movements, ignite emotions of euphoric bliss and harmony—both without the need for verbal instruction. Both incite strangers to turn to one another and hug without premonition or condition. Both can inspire—a 4-year will share the same admonition for the moment as an 83-year old coping through dementia. Leastwise, sports and music create sporadic celebrations of unfiltered joy. And that, today, is what the NY Knicks created for a city of 8 million + people—tens of thousands of who are in jails and prisons—others disabled, in hospitals, in rehab centers—for people struggling to make ends meet. Today the concrete jungle won. Knicks in 5. Knicks in 5. Knicks in 5. by @_marlonpeterson

@lizajessiepeterson texted me personally and said: ā€œDon’t just like or share. Buy tickets. We need butts in seats.ā€So that’s what I’m telling you.The Peculiar Patriot is one of the most important pieces of theatre about incarceration, patriotism, and what it means to love a country that doesn’t always love you back. Written and performed by Liza Jessie Peterson. Directed by Talvin Wilks.I’ll be in conversation with DeRay McKesson for the post-show talkback — Unpacking the Complex: The Politics of Policy — at the National Black Theatre on June 12.But none of it matters if the seats are empty.Buy tickets. What happens when you stop leading with your wound and start building with your lens? You stop performing your pain for rooms that need your wisdom. You stop shrinking your analysis to fit the story they already decided about you.You stop being the cautionary tale and become the architect. The intelligence forged at the bottom of systems — in cells, on street corners, in the rooms nobody photographs — that’s not trauma to recover from. That’s a methodology.New essay is live.
