One very random pregnancy craving has been re-binge-watching Gossip Girl. It’s become my ritual for when I struggle to switch off and fall asleep.

So a little fashion week highlight was being invited to the @verafied_official party to see their gorgeous collection and getting to meet the effortlessly elegant Kelly Rutherford.

She told me how she brought her six-month-old baby to the audition where she landed her iconic role as Lily van der Woodsen, and later filmed while pregnant with her second. As someone who’s spent years in the same industry, now navigating all the unknowns ahead, her story hit a little closer to home.

Oui… Pregnant. Single Parent Motherhood, here I come.

And no, not at all the story I was writing for myself. So far, it’s been painful, confusing and terrifying, I hate to say. At times, it’s made it hard to connect with her, or even comprehend the reality ahead.

Seven months in, I understand women I never fully could before. The women left carrying the responsibility of a life two people chose to create, becoming full-time mothers while finding the work to provide — somehow rebuilding lives of their own, grieving while also expected to be celebrating.

I don’t know how you do it. But I see you. And I guess I’m about to find out.

Sadly, some people are only there for the good times. When life gets hard, they run, leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces they broke.

Instead, I’m focusing on my beautiful army of angels, showing up when I need them, reminding me life can still be beautiful, even when someone has tried to make it otherwise.

To everyone who let me be vulnerable, reminded me I can do this, loved me, made me laugh and let me cry… thank you.

For the beds, couches, borrowed clothes, rides, meals and phone calls. For asking how she is. Feeling her kick. Laughing about names. Making me feel beautiful in a changing body. Sitting beside me at doctor’s appointments. For helping me swallow my pride and ask for help.

And for reminding me that becoming a mother doesn’t mean losing myself. I’m still finding my feet in a life I didn’t plan, doing my best to keep my career, friendships and adventures alive — now with her along for the ride.

My unexpected little babymoons.

My girl will grow up knowing about the people who loved her before she even arrived. She is already so treasured, and apparently very ready for life’s adventures with me. And me with her.

We may be entering this as the two of us, but you’ve made us feel anything but alone.

And to the girl lying awake through pregnancy, terrified about how she’ll do this: let me be there for you too, like so many have been there for me.

We need each other. Please reach out. 🤍
