This is me, my first day back at school.

Last time I was in school, it was for photography, twenty years ago. My parents didn’t want me to go. My dad thought I should go into Human Resources instead. The day before I left, he smacked his palm down hard on the kitchen counter and said, “I don’t understand it, it’s like you’re deciding to become an artist or something.”

When I called to say I’d applied to grad school, for an MFA in creative writing, and got in — they were thrilled. I’d called on FaceTime and managed to catch them both. My mom was on her way out for a breakfast date at A&W. They laughed and smiled a lot. And just before the call ended, my dad said, “I’m proud of you, Michelle.”

It still feels a touch surreal, sitting amongst so many intelligent and ambitious writers, knowing we are at the start of a years-long journey. I find myself wondering if I’m doing this right, while still in awe that I’m here, another dream coming true. taken in Antioch University MFA Program by @_michelleyee

June 17th, 2016: I left my house keys for the new owners on the kitchen counter and locked myself out. Everything I owned was in a storage locker. Three days later, I landed in Tbilisi, Georgia; a region of the world that I'd never been to and knew nothing about. It was the furthest I'd ever been from home, figuratively and literally.

Whenever I look at this image, I’m transported back to that time. As I wandered through the narrow, cobble-stoned streets of that enigmatic city, I was unlearning my fear of the unknown. In its place, I recovered a sense of childlike wonder. My once-grey world was lush with magic and possibility once again.
