Between 1962-1975, Oscar Niemeyer was commissioned to design the Tripoli International Fair. As the structure was on the verge of completion, the events of the 1970s transfigured the structure into something gargantuan, incomplete, and abandoned - a white elephant. A biker’s trip through Tripoli becomes the backdrop through which we explore these events from the standpoint of the city’s residents. Along his journey, the fair catches his eye. He approaches its gates only to enter a state of delirium and be taken on a sonic journey along the Orient Express. Niemayer takes a drag of his cigarette and waxes poetic. Somewhere along this stream of consciousness, he reflects on the relationship between structures and the society that surrounds them, eventually commenting on what has become of the thing he built. taken in Oscar Niemeyer by @_microperson

Marsah ArtWeek TAKEOVER — Hammam Ezzedine
DAY 6: WEDNESDAY, Oct 14

As part of Marsah Art Week’s expansion beyond its own walls, The Beginning Was Water takes the form of a site-specific exhibition at Hammam Ezzedine, approaching water, the river, and the hammam as carriers of memory, movement, history, and transformation.

Rebecca Tawk’s documentary work follows the Abu Ali River’s journey into Tripoli, revealing the layers of memory embedded within its course.

Ahmad Nabulsi’s immersive VR installation creates a fictional journey through what has been erased, blending documentation, imagination, and reconstruction. Through the character of Abu Ali, the river is given a human presence and a voice to reflect on its own transformation.

Within the hammam, Nabulsi’s sound installation reimagines the space through the sounds of water, bathing, voices, and movement, bringing its former life into the present.

Together, the works create an encounter between river, site, memory, and imagination.

10:00–18:00 | Exhibition Opening - Hammam Ezzedine
This exhibition is public and will remain open until Wednesday, Oct 18

This is us, memories scattered, hearts still beating anyway.
I broke the day I put you into words, and something in me rotted after.
My blood is soaked into the corners of places we never dared to name.
My hair falling out, my back aching, my jaw clenched shut.
This is what we built out of all of it.
All I ever wanted was to play. All I ever loved was a story I needed to tell.
To my friends, my loved ones, the ones who stood in front of the camera, and the ones who stood behind it
I'm sharing a few frames I've always been fond of, from "Red Thread," a film we shot in the middle of the war on Lebanon, while we hid in tiny shelters, writing just to stay alive. taken in City complex souvenir by @_microperson

On Saturday, September 19, Écrans du Réel - Doc Screens brings together five Lebanese short films that approach questions of memory, belonging, displacement and the ways we look at the places and people that shape us.

What remains when a place changes, when we can no longer return to it, or when the images we carry of it begin to shift?

Moving between intimate observation, personal archives, experimental forms and hybrid storytelling, Master of the Morning by Ashraf Mtaweh, What is Ours by Wassim Tanios, Village Off-Frame by Hassane Chami, Red Thread by Ahmad Naboulsi and In Transit by Carla Aouad each explore different ways of inhabiting, remembering and making sense of a world in flux.

From landscapes marked by occupation and absence, to photographs that become fragile archives, forgotten spaces where memories resurface, and the traces of lives carried across borders, these films turn their gaze toward what remains, and what changes , when our relationship to a place is no longer straightforward.

Together, they form a portrait of memory and belonging that is at once deeply personal and collective.

📅 Saturday, September 19 - 20.00

Ticket price: 500,000 LBP

Tickets available at the Metropolis Cinema box office, all Librairie Antoine branches, and via AntoineTicketing.com.

Student tickets (400.000 LBP) are available exclusively at the cinema box office.

The 21st edition of Écrans du Réel - Doc screens is organised by Metropolis Cinema with the support of IMS by @_microperson

This year, we’re kicking off #RMF05 with the premiere of BLACK MOUSE: DECONSTRUCTED, a new project co-produced by Rumman and ‪@oobconcept‬.

This project transforms Ahmad Naboulsi’s award-winning short film “Black Mouse” into a live audiovisual performance that brings together music, voice, light and fragments of memory to reactivate the Tripoli International Fair; a monument shaped by history, absence and political neglect.
