New Conversation for The Architect’s Newspaper:
Maryam recently spoke with Ziad Jamaleddine of L.E.F.T. Architects about "At the Edge of Where God Built"—a book that asks what architecture might recover when we look beyond typology toward language, ritual, and spatial knowledge.

The MAK Center is pleased to present a book launch celebrating "At the Edge of Where God Built: Language. Concepts. Islamic Architecture." Join us on Thursday, July 30 at the MAK Center at the Schindler House for a conversation between Ziad Jamaleddine of L.E.FT Architects and architect and urban designer Maryam Eskandari.

The book undertakes a critical examination of L.E.FT Architects’ work from the past decade, reorganizing their designs, research, and pedagogy around five key Arabic spatial terms: mataf (circumambulation space), jami (mosque space), riwaq (a courtyard’s colonnade), dar (domestic space), and khirba (a ruin). Rooted in Arab-speaking, Islamic geographies of the Middle East and North Africa, these concepts offer a framework for understanding contemporary architecture beyond fixed typologies, revealing its fluid and multifaceted possibilities.

Copies of At the Edge of Where God Built will be available for purchase during the event. For more information and to RSVP, please visit the link in our bio.

JUNETEENTH

Today, on Juneteenth (June 19), we pause to reflect on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity in America.

At MIIM Designs, we're spending part of the day reading Seeking El Dorado, a collection that explores the experiences, contributions, and histories of African Americans in California. The book reminds us that the stories of place, community, and opportunity are deeply connected to the landscapes we design and the cities we inhabit.

As designers, we believe the built environment is more than space—it is memory, culture, and a reflection of who is included in our collective future. Juneteenth invites us to honor the struggles and achievements that have shaped our communities while continuing to imagine more just and inclusive places for everyone.

What if restoring urban nature meant repairing histories, habitats, and relationships all at once?
At MIIM, we’re inspired by projects that challenge conventional approaches to urban ecology and expand how we think about stewardship, infrastructure, and design justice.

@miim_esk “Reparative Ecologies of Return: Rewilding the El Segundo Gateway” — featured in @theplanmag The Plan Journal’s Fall 2025 issue, The Nature of Cities — offers a vision for ecological and cultural repair through landscape architecture.

Situated between the Chevron Refinery and @flylaxairport LAX, the project reimagines a constrained urban corridor as multispecies infrastructure: reconnecting hydrological systems, supporting the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly, and translating Tongva spatial knowledge into a contemporary civic landscape.

The work asks us to reconsider what urban regeneration can mean — not simply beautification, but reciprocity, memory, and long-term care.

#essay | “Publishing as Spatial Infrastructure: Maryam Eskandari in the Schindler House.”

Architect, educator, advocate and principal of MIIM Designs @_miimdesigns, Maryam Eskandari @miim_esk takes a holistic view of spatial practice. Writing from her experience of the 1922 Schindler House — now operational as the Reading Room of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in West Hollywood @makcenter — this essay sees Eskandari drawing published matter into the realm of spatial and political infrastructure.

Sediment, not waste. Accumulation, not rupture.
