In a wild turn of events, I somehow got into the Archibald. I’ve been quietly working away on this one since last year. My beautiful sister @grace.carroll sat for me during one of her morning classes with the @ausballet • I am forever in awe of her unwavering passion and dedication — from one artist to another 🤍
I couldn’t be happier to be included in such a momentous prize with a painting so close to my heart. Thank you for this incredible opportunity @artgalleryofnsw and congratulations to all the finalists.

Very excited to be a finalist once again in the John Leslie Prize at @gippsartgallery with this painting ‘alpineroad-7’.
I’ve been painting this particular stretch of road for 10 years now and I’m still drawn back to it. Something about way the snow transforms the familiar bush into another world. A diffused glow makes the forest feel almost underwater, suspended, soft and weightless.
Painted from a video taken out the car window.

ON NOW - ‘See the Sun’ curated by Bridie Gillman, takes a specific experience as its starting point, featuring works by Amelia Carroll.

Gillman writes: ‘Driving out of Murwillumbah I was overcome with awe at the intense, fiery sun late in the day and close to descending behind the mountains in the Tweed Valley. A layer of sugarcane burning haze helped to define the outer rim of the sun as it sat heavy in the sky. I looked too long, the afterimage remained, hovering in my vision.

I close my eyes. I see the sun.’

The exhibition features three works by Amelia Carroll.

Gillman writes of these works:

Amelia Carroll’s painting ‘evening-7’ (2025) somehow directly captures the type of sun from my experience. Its subtle, hazy atmosphere overturns any negative associations with the subject to beautifully introduce the premise of this show. Amelia’s practice engages with painting’s relationship to the digital image with her works in ‘See the Sun’, based on photographs taken while living in Sri Lanka during 2024.
Appearing almost photoreal at a distance (or in the palm of your hand on a smartphone), closer inspection reveals soft, fuzzy edges and blurred forms. Painting imbues these scenes with an emotion that I feel is more difficult to express with photography, conveying a feeling, rather than simply documenting a moment in time. I’m familiar with the feeling in evening-6 (2025) – of watching my surroundings turn into silhouettes, observing the flocks of birds fly across the sky. Looking for bats. Amelia’s paintings feel like memory.’

Another new painting ‘evening-6’ included in ‘See the Sun’ at @edwinacorlette • The work is based off photographs taken whilst living in Sri Lanka last year. There’s an opening event tomorrow 2-4pm - if you’re in Brisbane come and check it out. Thanks again @bridiegillman & @edwinacorlette • such a beautiful collection of work.
