Last month, while driving along the Skagit, I had an unexpectedly lucky encounter. Last stop of the day was just a pull off to change out of my boots and then I spotted this beautiful bald eagle perched in a tree nearby.

Dinosaurs died. She survived. Meet the female Belted Kingfisher, marked by her rust colored belt. In Coast Salish stories the Kingfisher is a symbol of luck, fertility, and skillful hunting. Each season she pairs with one mate, sometimes the same one, shares every parenting duty equally, and tops it off with a mohawk reminiscent of a Steller’s Jay.

I would’ve missed this completely if the crow’s hadn’t been making a scene. Just an hour ago, its nonstop cawing led me to a bald eagle in front of my house with its catch. 🦅🐦‍⬛🐇

Beginner birding tip 👀⬇️
If the crows are making a scene, chances are they’ve spotted a bird of prey like a hawk, owl, falcon, or eagle before you have.
