Contested Belonging and the American Promise is the first Southern California solo exhibition by artist Vani Aguilar, presented by the Scripps College Department of History, Africana Studies, and the Clark Humanities Museum. Drawing on Latino urban life in Chicago and Northeast Los Angeles, Aguilar’s airbrushed acrylic and colored-pencil works capture intimate scenes of everyday joy, memory, and struggle in rapidly changing neighborhoods. Featuring a collaborative mural with students from “Birthright Citizenship: Belonging & Exclusion in U.S. History,” the exhibition asks a pressing question for America @ 250: What does America look like when everyone is seen? taken in Clark Humanities Museum by @_muneco

Opening Sunday, March 8th🌟🌟🌟
Come check out a couple recent drawings of mine including this one @2413hyperion

Friends & Lovers is a group show curated by @good_naked

The artworks in this exhibition rely on close looking and attention. Each artist pauses on their subject with love and care. Material play calls us toward subtle interactions and fleeting moments. The lonely crowd and city at night take center stage as figures negotiate space and feeling.

Back a week now from @penlandschool of Craft and still feeling the electric energy the space, my peers and time in the studio has filled me with🌟 So grateful to be invited by @salvador_jimenez_flores to help assist the workshop he led🗿
I went in feeling a little out of place as a painter but ended up super happy with my projects and reminded of how much liberty clay brings to my practice 💗 looking forward to continuing my clay practice here in LA
Already missing all the friends that I made during my time there but maybe I’ll catch y’all at the next NCECA🤞🏽🤞🏽 taken in Penland School of Crafts by @_muneco

At the top of the year I gained an Angel when my grandma Anita unexpectedly passed. My return home allowed me to spend significant time with her, which I’m so grateful for. I miss walking into her driveway n yelling grandma to hear her excitement that one of her grand babies came to see her. My grandma loved to be dolled up and loved to fill her outdoor space with plants. ‘Til next time grandma 🫂🤍🕊️

New in Intervenxions by Xavier Robles Armas for @latinxprojnyu

“With ‘Blinked Twice,’ Vani Aguilar (@_muneco) captures the networks between Chicago, where they previously lived, and Los Angeles, where they are from and currently reside . . .

The paintings document everyday moments—like two people sitting beside each other on a porch and three chihuahuas running around. But if you blink twice, you may miss the neighbors sparking their charcoal grill or, in a scene reminiscent of ‘Qué Calor’ (2023), the señoras gossiping as they hold on to the fence because the chisme is that good. And if you blink again you may miss the demolition of the structure you once knew as home. These ephemeral moments happen as a neighborhood undergoes a rapid spatial and psychosocial shift. Blink twice and you will miss it.”

We are so grateful for you Xavier! (@humanafterall)

Vani Aguilar is a Los Angeles based Chicanx painter who was born and raised in Pasadena, California. They attained their BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and their AA from Pasadena City College. Aguilar’s work reinterprets traditionally Chicano modes of image making to contend with their identity and the changing landscape of brown working class neighborhoods that they’ve spent significant time in throughout Southern California and Chicago. While acknowledging the negative implications of gentrification, their luminous compositions carry a passively poised disposition. Vani has received several awards including Ox-Bow’s Latinx Artist Visibility Award, SAIC’s IDEA grant, and Watershed Center for Ceramic Art’s Zenobia Award. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @_muneco

𝓑𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓴𝓮𝓭 𝓣𝔀𝓲𝓬𝓮 is the first solo exhibition in Chicago of Los Angeles-based artist Vani Aguilar. Showcasing the artist’s trajectory with new and previously made works, the exhibition calls back to the phrase “Blink twice and you’ll miss it”, a figure of speech signaling moments of remembrance and awe.

Working across airbrushed acrylic and colored pencil drawings to create chrome-like scenes that invite moments of pause, Aguilar negotiates themes of transformation and remembrance in the contemporary rapidly changing urban landscape. In this body of work, Aguilar sheds light upon the beauty of their communities and the environments that they exult in. Amidst the changing cultural landscapes of Los Angeles and Chicago, they draw upon friends, front lawns, construction sites, and dogs at play to remember and reimagine moments of vitality, celebration, and brilliance—blink twice and you’ll miss it.

Vani Aguilar is a Los Angeles based Chicanx painter who was born and raised in Pasadena, California. They attained their BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and their AA from Pasadena City College. Aguilar’s work reinterprets traditionally Chicano modes of image making to insert contemporary conversations of queer belonging in a moment of rapidly changing demographic shift in major cities. Vani has received several awards including Ox-Bow’s Latinx Artist Visibility Award, SAIC’s IDEA grant, and Watershed Center for Ceramic Art’s Zenobia Award.
