From Thisispaper+ New York Guide A procession from the street to a cellar bathhouse: in New York, MV-LLC sends guests through a wood-paneled reception down to The Altar, where saunas and cold plunges ring a granite atrium. The Altar occupies a former Gap on New York’s Fifth Avenue, two disjointed units split between the ground floor and the cellar below. Its founders, Henrique Castro, Sheba Jafari and Stuart Winecoff, wanted a health club that worked as a social hub. “They wanted it to also be a social gathering hub where people can actually talk and where there’s music,” said Wallo Villacorta, who founded the studio with Cyril Marsollier. The layout draws on both ancient bathhouses and nightclubs. Interiors: @_mv_llc_ @thealtar_nyc @dessellepartners Read more at thisispaper.com by @_mv_llc_

Among these bathhouses, one stands out: @thealtar_nyc. A proponent of “exploring a culture of health through the strength of a collective,” it is a bathhouse whose mission is rooted in the service of community. Anyone concerned that the experience might feel like a return to high school, showering with teammates after volleyball practice, will be quickly disarmed. The Altar, and project architects Marsollier Villacorta LLC, have rendered it chic to carry out self-care practices in public. Offering more than contrast therapy, members have access to vitamin IVs and shots, NAD therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, compression therapy, red light therapy, and PEMF treatments. Meanwhile, the lighting, sound, temperature and atmosphere of the space transport guests into an unexpected world, a novel type of euphoria for a weeknight in Manhattan. Cyril Marsollier and Wallo Villacorta—the architects behind Marsollier Villacorta LLC—were originally brought together through an architectural competition that highlighted their complementary vision and way of working together: Marsollier takes inspiration from architecture and art, and Villacorta from cinema and music. It is their shared love of exploring “un-designed” spaces that provides much of the creative referencing for their design process. For The Altar, Marsollier and Villacorta drew inspiration from a broad range of historical and contemporary references, from Middle Eastern and North African hammams and Roman baths to modern underground nightclubs. Rather than polarise, these two veins of inspiration make perfect sense in a space like this. Together, they create an atmosphere of comfort and intimacy for bodies engaged in shared wellness rituals. This is a space in which functionality and aesthetics jibe with lighting, temperature, sound and technology. @stellavpeters in conversation with @cyril.marsollier and @wallo_villacorta of @_mv_llc_ Documented by @mcmahon_photo by @_mv_llc_

Health club design for The Altar NYC New York City, 122 5th Avenue The wet spaces at The Altar are softly illuminated with warm, filtered light — cast through tan fiberglass or waxed linen fabric. In the communal shower, brushed stainless steel panels clad the surrounding walls, catching the light from above and dispersing it gently around the space. At the cold plunge, wood surrounds visitors, offering a visual warmth that balances the sensorial cold. @thealtar_nyc @dessellepartners #marsolliervillacortallc #thealtar #dessellepartners by @_mv_llc_
Health club design for The Altar NYC New York City, 122 5th Avenue The Atrium, where visitors first experience The Altar, is centrally anchored by a granite water fountain. The piece is built from solid stone components: three lower rings, a carved sloped top ring, and a central plate insert that receives the water. The custom stainless steel faucet was fabricated by expert metal worker, Juan Carlos Domínguez in Mexico City. @thealtar_nyc @dessellepartners @jc.domino60 #thealtar #marsolliervillacortallc #dessellepartners #juancarlosdomínguez by @_mv_llc_
