Last night at @cafe_babette I presented two publications about a camera that was somehow
too digital to be analog, but too analog to be digital.

What remains?
This question appears on a banner hanging on the facade of the former Jewish orphanage on Berliner Straße – visible to everyone. The banner expands upon the work "Was bleibt?" (What remains?) by artist Martin Volman, which is exhibited in the building, into public space and invites passersby, neighbors, and tourists to pause for a moment and reflect on the question of what remains.

Inside the orphanage, this same question takes the physical form of a carpet. It features a guilloche pattern, a complex design typically found on passports, banknotes, and documents. As soon as viewers walk over it, they recognize systems of authentication and belonging. They must walk over the sensitive patterns, otherwise they cannot enter the room, and in doing so gradually erase what was actually meant to be permanent.
The installation transforms the carpet into a threshold where remembering meets bureaucracy and the sacred meets the administrative. This blurs the boundary between preserving and disappearing. Ultimately, perhaps only the question itself remains. It is directed at all who are ready to remember: What remains? taken in Jewish Orphanage Berlin-Pankow by @_mvolman_
