✮ Meet the Team: Naomi Frank, Student Assistant ✮

What are you currently focusing on in your work with digital media? How is this reflected in your artistic/creative/theoretical practice?
My sculptural practice is currently merging with technology as I create kinetic objects. I am interested in the interplay between organic forms and artificial imitation, exploring variation within repetition and ghostlike yet playful movement. In the future, I want to build on this approach by learning to control motors more precisely through programming.

What do you do in the (Un)Learning Digitalities team?
I am mostly involved in preparing posts for social media - editing text and images. Also, I help with the organization of our events, act as a point of contact for students on-site and support with documentation. In the upcoming semester, I will focus more on reworking the (Un)learning Digitalities page on the HGB website, researching for Tool of the Week and co-develop the program for the FLINTA* Hacking Circle.

What has been a highlight for you in the program so far?
The Permacomputing Workshop led by Chaline Bang and Martynus Jekentaite, where I was able to actively participate in addition to my organizational tasks during the workshop. It had the most impact on me by sparking the idea for the FLINTA* Hacking Circle and making me visit the haecksen-Treff at dezentrale hackspace Leipzig.

Join the first meetup of our 𝐅𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐀* 𝐇𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐈𝐑𝐂𝐋𝐄 next week during Liquid Coding! Monday, 12.1., 5 - 8 pm, HGB Room 3.45 ヾ(・ω・*)ノ

The idea of coming together in order to learn more about coding as beginners sparked from a Permacomputing workshop, where we explored how minimal hardware and open-source systems can enable sustainable, cost-efficient, and creative approaches to computation. The goal was to repurpose obsolete smartphones by transforming them into self-hosted servers by using an open-source operating system called PostmarketOS.

For this session of Liquid Coding, we thought of starting to go through these steps at our own pace to get more familiar with the basics of programming language in the process. Again: all of us are at a total beginner level, so there are no skills required to join our group! <33 We also thought of compiling a list of everyones interests for further meetups! If you have any ideas or projects in mind, feel free to share them with us during that time.

If you want to work on something else outside of the FLINTA* Hacking Circle during Liquid Coding, you are welcome to do so!

✦ What is Liquid Coding as a format? ✦

We hang out, eat snacks, share knowledge, and work on our own things or projects together. Think of it like casual co-working. It is not a lecture – you can drop in and out as you want.

Liquid Coding is a self-organized space at HGB that enables collaborative exploration of programming practices in an open co-learning studio setting. The sessions are accessible to all levels of experience and often begin with a shared discussion round in which ongoing projects, ideas, tutorials, skills, and questions can be presented.

„keep my smaller selves“ by @_naomifrank_, in “Giving and Giving”, the classes Groupexhibition for this years annual Show in February @hgbleipzig .

Souvenirs serve as traces of experiences that one desires to hold onto when their materiality has escaped. These objects are not born from need but from nostalgia, drawing one into a cycle longing where the original context is replaced by a new, constructed meaning. In a commercial sense, they commodify memories which reinforces the disconnect from the souvenirs‘ origin. The molds, shaped like a shell, reference the symbolic exchanges we participate in when gifting souvenirs. Hinting at something that can be reproduced, their empty form becomes an invitation for individual significance and desire. Adorned by a band of little silhouettes, the objects reference the ritual of hermit crabs exchanging and repurposing shells along the shore as they grow.
