It’s not that I didn’t know how big of an issue this is in the US but I guess seeing characters live this reality and how different their conversations, opinions and values are because of it was what felt so interesting to observe. It’s often what I feel when Europeans, who moved to the US, describe the curiosities they experience there and the level of unsafety they feel for their kids. It’s really upsetting. The Drama is definitely a conversation starter on so many levels.

Day 22 of watching one iconic movie from every European country - Austria 🇦🇹

The Austrian Oscar nominee Revanche staring Johannes Krisch is an intimate drama full of contrasts. A prostitute falls in love. Her boyfriend is a robber. A calm and family oriented man accidentally kills her. The boyfriend knows the killer but can’t chase him because he would reveal he is the robber. All this drama happens in the countryside surrounded by forests, lakes and cows. Be ready for a slow artsy pace but emotional turmoil under it.

Day 21 of watching one iconic movie from every European country - Ireland 🇮🇪

Now, this movie was stunning. Indie vibes all over the place, Oscar-winning music, freedom that is only felt through art, slow, soft, down-to-earth romance, such rawness and authenticity that I haven’t seen in a long time. One of the best films I have seen in this challenge so far. ⭐️

I do have to say though that Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglová have a slightly questionable history in their private life as apparently he met her when she was 12 and he was 31 and they began dating when she turned 18 during the promotional tour for Once 😅 the relationship lasted only two years though and Marketa now lives in Iceland, married to the Icelandic musician and producer Sturla Mio Thorisson. Glen was married to a Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa but died in July 2026 (bike accident).
