I still cannot find the right words.

I lost my younger brother a few days ago, and I am still trying to understand how this is real.

I knew how terrible sickle cell could be because he had battled it for 25 years of his life. I knew he had been through crises before and had come out of them. So somewhere in my mind, I think I had convinced myself that this would be another crisis he would overcome.

I did not know how quickly sickle cell could take someone from being happy and bubbly to deteriorating so rapidly and then, just like that, death.

I have always lived with the fear that one day, sickle cell would take my brother away from us. I just wasn’t prepared for that day to come now. Would I have ever been prepared though?

I was there when he took his last breath. I watched my little brother fight to stay alive.

Pamo had every reason to be tired of life, yet he still found ways to laugh, to live, to be himself.

He was also the person who saw the weirdest side of me the most😄

I could literally start dancing in front of him and do some ridiculous choreography while he just watched me.

I will miss you so much, my boy.

I will miss our gist, our rants, our random conversations. I will miss the way I would playfully cuddle you at night, and so much more.

I also keep thinking about your final year project.

I remember encouraging you to use yourself as a case study and do your project around sickle cell awareness. I remember you showing me your Google Form and the responses you were getting. We were ready to see that project come to life.

You didn’t get to finish it.

But don’t worry, Pamo. We will carry it on.

Your project will still come to life. And maybe it will reach even more people than we ever imagined.

Because sickle cell is terrible.

No one should have to spend their entire life battling pain. No family should have to live with the constant fear of losing a child. And no one should knowingly bring a child into a life of this suffering when they have the information and the opportunity to make a different decision.

My parents did not have the information we have today when they got married. But we know better now. by @_niphemi_
