On 27 October, Sotheby's in New York will auction Jodi, a Nanotyrannus found in 2019 on a ranch in Garfield County, Montana. 191 bones, a nearly complete skull with 35 teeth. Estimate: 6 to 9 million dollars.

That's what bothers me. Nanotyrannus sits right in the middle of one of the biggest debates in palaeontology: is it its own small tyrannosaur, or just a teenage T. rex? The case for a separate animal has grown a lot stronger lately, and every good skeleton helps settle it. A fossil like Jodi belongs in a museum collection, where researchers can measure it, CT-scan it and publish on it. Most journals won't accept a paper on a specimen that sits in a private collection. If Jodi ends up as a showpiece in someone's lobby, that science is gone.

Fossils aren't decor. They're the only record we have of these animals.

This is my model, Jody. Funny timing: I'd already started the base sculpt of a Nanotyrannus a few months ago, and when Sotheby's released their photos of Jodi, they turned out to be exactly the reference I needed. So Jody follows Jodi's proportions and mount pose.

Available soon as STL files. On request I'll also prepare Jody at life size for 3D printing, for museums and exhibitions.

Gallimimus bullatus. Yes, the one from the herd scene in Jurassic Park. The real animal lived in the Nemegt Formation in Mongolia, about 70 million years ago.

I sculpted this 2 years ago from descriptions of the Nemegt specimens. 13 parts, about 53 cm long once it's built, holes for 4 mm rods.

Iguanodon bernissartensis, the Bernissart Iguanodon, built twice.

The modern mount stands on all fours, the way the animal is read today. The other is the famous 1882 standing pose from Brussels, upright with the tail on the ground. Dozens of these skeletons were found in a Belgian coal mine in 1878, 322 metres underground, and they still stand in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

Both skeletons are now in the shop as one STL kit: 25 parts, pin holes for 4 mm steel rod and a 36-page assembly manual. Link in bio.

Picture a fish of 5 to 6 metres with a mouth full of fangs. That’s Xiphactinus audax. About 85 million years ago it hunted in the sea that covered Kansas.

The smaller one is Gillicus arcuatus, roughly 2 metres long, and the pairing isn’t random. @sternbergmuseum in Hays, Kansas has a 4.2 m Xiphactinus with an almost complete Gillicus still inside it. It probably didn’t end well for the big one either.

Jeholosaurus shangyuanensis, life-size. A small plant-eater from the Early Cretaceous of Liaoning, China, built at the size of the holotype, which was a young animal. 72 cm from snout to tail tip.

The skull is sculpted on the CT models of a Jeholosaurus skull published in 2025 by Filippo Bertozzo and colleagues. Filippo also checked the finished skeleton and its measurements before I released it, and gave me advice along the way. Thanks Filippo.

The oldest dome-headed dinosaur anyone has found, and it was a kid.

Zavacephale rinpoche came out of the Gobi and was published last year. It's about 15 million years older than any other pachycephalosaur. Under a metre long and still growing, but the dome was already fully formed.

When they found it, the dome was sticking out of a cliff like a polished stone. Rinpoche is Tibetan for "precious one".

I just finished a life-size version of the skull. It fits in your hand.

Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis, life size, built from the skull Sotheby's sold last summer. Sixteen parts and a 20-page manual. Prints on a standard FDM machine or a large resin printer.

I'm back.

The shop is open again and the STL files are up for download, the new ones and the old ones, from desktop pieces to full life-size mounts.

Newest is Bambiraptor feinbergi: 847 mm, twenty printable parts, 23-page assembly manual. Berthasaura leopoldinae and Aquilops americanus are back up too.

All of them built from the published papers. Where a specimen is incomplete I say so, and I say what I reconstructed it from.
