Closing our artist features is Kamwangi Njue (@7headc0 ) and Cynthia Nyakiro (@_nyakiro )’s sound sculptures and bioleather installation that explore how land figuratively mutates following landmark events in history such as colonization and political protests, forging the grounds for new beginnings while maintaining continuity with the past.

Compared to the works by other artists showcasing in this exhibition, their work looks at the non-human agency of land, insisting that vegetation has autonomy to respond to events, be they in the past or in the present.

The Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI) and Munyu are excited to invite you to join a Paper-making Workshop led by Chela Yego and Cynthia Nyakiro.

Set within the context of the 'Between Signals' exhibition currently showing at NCAI, this one-day workshop will introduce participants to the artistry of handmade paper. Through hands-on demonstrations, Chela and Cynthia will guide participants through the entire process of creating handmade paper. From cutting, blending, layering, and embedding paper with unique tones, textures, and effects, to experimenting with linen, hair, and other organic materials, this pedagogical workshop offers a chance to experience paper-making anew.

Chela Yego works primarily in collage, sculpture and immersive installation. Her work is grounded in researching and exploring her inner world and her cultural heritage. Cynthia Nyakiro is a visual artist whose practice spans a range of media; she explores materiality, transformation and human experience through an experimental and process-driven approach. Chela and Cynthia are creative collaborators and the artists behind the installation 'Keketai', one of the pieces in the exhibition.
This programme is open to anyone interested in the visual arts, paper-making and exploring different mediums and ways of working. No previous experience in any field of creative expression is required to participate.

Spaces for this workshop are limited, and participants must sign up via the link in bio to secure a spot. The deadline for signing up is Wednesday, 26th November 2025, at 12 pm. taken in Westlands, Nairobi by @_nyakiro

‘Death infecting life’ 2025 Chela Yego x Nyakiro

Handmade paper made from recycled paper and linen, watercolor , food color , petals , braiding hair , thread and the found corpse of a lizard

While exploring the relationship between rage and the abject , we noted the fascination and the repulsion as a reaction to both .

Kristeva in her essay , The powers of horror , states that ‘ The corpse, seen without God and outside of science, is the utmost of abjection. It is death infecting life.Abject. It is something rejected from which one does not part,from which one does not protect oneself as from an object.Imaginary uncanniness and real threat, it beckons to us and ends up engulfing us.’

Just as corpse or wound forces us to confront our mortality , the thin border between life and death, so too do unbridled expressions of rage, through their disruption, compel us to confront the fragile foundations of social borders and order.
