This week in LA, Ode in collaboration with The Recording Academy's DREAM and Gold Music Alliance hosted an event called "Shaping the Sound."

After 12 years of advocating for South Asians in the arts and politics, it felt full circle to bring together a room of people I've worked with and new voices to openly discuss what our cultures mean (or don't mean) to us.

What does equity look and feel like to us?

I moderated two panels with the formidable @shreyaghoshal @lararaj @sameergadhia @springloaded @ashamadhukar @kasturishan @ramyavelury @aroopster @akhilhegde_

Performances by the prolific @raashikulkarni @shreyaghoshal

You will often be told to move faster, to stay relevant, to skip the line, compromise your care, your core, your culture - and focus on expediting results.

Don't do it.

We are not a line item on a profit and loss sheet, we are an ecosystem that needs to invest in retaining ownership of our OWN stories.

Big up @lyon_ricky and the GMA team for making this happen and for feeding us @pijjapalace by @_odeto_

what is a "body," of work? why do we refer to collections, multiples, stories told in orders occasionally chronological, as "bodies?"

this "body," of work, to me, represents Rashmeet's tapasaya, her commitment to not only her vocal and performance craft but to constantly evolving, to learning and un-learning, to telling intentional stories.

the eight song album titled PARINDA is the journey of being lost in love only to return to loving oneself.

when Rashmeet and I shared the album with colleagues and DSPs, I found myself explaining the origins of each Punjabi metaphor, explaining the significance of the word, PARINDA, while to many it means "bird," it is an emblem of freedom.

who has the freedom to love themselves?
who has the freedom to create bodies of work?
who has the freedom to be free?

spend time with PARINDA, take note of how the compositions feel in your body and mind, enjoy the many influences from R&B, singer songwriter ballads, Punjabi folk and Bollywood you will find in this project.

allow PARINDA to free you from the notion that art, artists and YOU should be defined by any one thing.
be everything, you too are a free bird.

After ten years in this industry, I can tell you this:

Curation leads to discovery. Discovery leads to purchasing.

If curators are programming one woman for every ten men, we don't have an economics problem—we have a curation problem. That creates a discovery problem, which becomes a purchasing problem.

The irony is that some of the biggest songs coming out of South Asia feature women—whether through vocals, hooks, verses, or samples. Talent has never been the issue. Opportunity has.

For most of my career, I've avoided talking about gender. It has always felt obvious, boring, and honestly dehumanizing to have to defend the quality of our work by contextualizing it with our gender.

Sometimes the receipts matter.

I had the pleasure of curating Rashmeet Kaur's North American tour supporting acts.

Our lineup included @ramyapothuri , @djsharad @samicamusic and @sandhujaps (who would have opened Dallas had we not cancelled because of technical issues). In Birmingham last year we had @khxshi.kaur

Guest artists included @abhilasha_sinha @benparmusic, @natashanoorani @priakhil @simarsworld_ @raaginder @bains.raman

We sold out or came close to selling out nearly every venue. Every show was on a weekday.

There is no shortage of talent.
There is a shortage of intent.

There is no shortage of incredible music being made by South Asian women. There is a concentration of power in curation, booking, representation, and distribution—and those decisions shape what audiences are given the chance to discover.

The success of artists like Rhea Raj, Lara Raj, Raveena, Dhee, Mary Ann Alexander, Jasmine Sandlas, Arooj Aftab, Nseebo Lal, Abida Parveen, Anoushka Shankar, Shreea Kaul, Rehma, Gayathri Ramakrishnan, Anusha, Rianjali and so many others continues to prove the same thing: the exclusion of South Asian women from stages is a choice, not a reflection of demand.

So the next time someone tells you, "women don't sell tickets" or gives you another version of the same tired excuse, stop asking them for permission.

Book the shows, don't wait for an agent
Release the music, don't wait for a deal
Invest in black and brown communities
