“Our actions bear witness not only to the existence, but also to the nature of the thoughts in our minds and the feelings in our hearts; they are the offspring of those thoughts and feelings, and, depending on whether the ‘parents’ are good or evil, our actions will themselves be good or evil. They will be good only if the intellect is inspired by wisdom and the heart by love. The ideal of the intellect is to manifest wisdom; the ideal of the heart is to manifest love, and the ideal of the resulting act of the will is to manifest truth. This means that insofar as the thoughts of your intellect strive for wisdom and the feelings of your heart strive for love, you abide in truth. And there you have the whole secret of truth. It is very simple.
It is easy to say that you have found the truth. A great many people make this claim, but when you see how they behave it is only too obvious that the truth they claim to have found is not inspired by wisdom and love. It is a person’s behaviour that shows whether he or she is living in truth, not the theories or fantasies they may talk about. The extraordinary thing is that human beings have made truth into a kind of abstraction, whereas, on the contrary, it is in the way they behave and live their daily lives that it can be seen as a concrete reality.
You must never again say that you are looking for the truth or that you have failed to find it, for there is nothing to look for and nothing to be found. There is only one thing to do and that is to grow in wisdom and love. If you possess love and wisdom you also possess truth, whether you lay claim to it or not, and everyone will be able to sense this. Perhaps the comparison will surprise you, but I like to think of truth as a medal or coin, one face of which is love and the other wisdom. You will never find truth as an isolated element, for it cannot be conceived independently of the heart and the mind. It is your love and wisdom that will show you truth.”

“This is the way of a true disciple. He does not stay forever in the solitary splendor of the mountain tops, but neither does he stay too long at a time in the dust, noise and tumult of the valleys. He goes up and down; up and down. To go down is to manifest love; to go up is to seek wisdom, to study, meditate and pray. It is not good to study for too long without going down at some point to help others with one’s knowledge. You must get into the habit of practising this alternation. The ascetics, hermits and recluses who fled to caves in the wilderness did not always have the best solution to this problem; but neither do those who have never scaled a mountain, that is to say, who have never felt the need of a spiritual life.
If someone goes up to the heights to study, meditate and pray and stays there too long, he will be tempted by pride, for he will feel superior to others and his heart will be hardened against them. And when this happens, who will go to visit him? A few bold mountaineers may perhaps; but after one or two attempts even they will be discouraged by his haughtiness and the cold welcome they get, and they will not go back. So he will remain alone and disenchanted, feeling that nobody understands or appreciates him. The only solution is for him to do what water does: go down into the valley.
The valleys symbolize kindness, generosity, tenderness and fertility. Trees, gardens, orchards, flowers, towns and human beings are to be found in valleys, not on the mountain tops. On mountain tops are rocks, ice and barrenness. Are you always lonely? If so, go down into the valleys where you will find abundance, where flow the rivers of love. The learning you acquire on the mountain tops has to melt and form rivulets, streams and rivers to enrich the valleys. Your intelligence must take you up to the mountain tops, and your love must take you down into the valleys.”

“We came to earth to do work similar to the work done by alchemists. We are given a substance - matter - from which we must extract the quintessence. This quintessence is the only wealth we will take with us when we die, and we will continue to work with it in the other worlds. You may be wondering how this word ‘matter’ should be understood. It’s simple: everything in our daily life - our activities, our encounters with others - is a kind of matter for us to transform through the power of the spirit. So, that also implies working on ourselves, because we too are matter: even our thoughts, our feelings, our desires and our states of consciousness are matter that we must transform. So, alchemical work is done both externally and internally at the same time. While we work on matter, we also work on ourselves. This is why we must not run away from matter but consciously take on our earthly activities, just as any materialist would do. What distinguishes us from materialists is our perspective, and this should be our guiding principle.”

“People have a tendency today to consider that nothing is sacred, on the pretext that they have to demonstrate their critical thinking and demystify the philosophical and religious notions that over-credulous generations have helped to build. This tendency is very inimical to their advancement, because it causes nature to close up and refuse to reveal her secrets. Nature only reveals herself to those who have a sense of the sacred. If you learn to cultivate this sense you will receive extraordinary revelations. And not only from prophets and seers. The revelations that come from them are not in fact very substantial unless they also come from you. When you have the right attitude, revelations will also come from within you, and you will be surprised to discover marvels that you have never even dreamed of.”

“People will not find the solution to their sexual problems by wallowing in pleasure. Pleasure is only halfway along the path; if they stay there, they will gradually find that they are becoming bound, that they have lost all their freedom and lightness of heart. A butterfly cannot fly when its wings are soaked with moisture. That’s what pleasure is: too much moisture. When I see a man whose wings cannot lift him (symbolically speaking), I do not need to ask him where he has been hiding himself, I know that he has exposed his wings to too much dampness. It is very obvious to me that moisture prevents flight. It takes a long time to dry out in the light. So beware; do not be deceived by pleasure which will stop you mid-way... go right on to the light!”

“I have often noticed that people are much more afraid of the Spirit and sublime states of consciousness than they are of Hell and all its devils, of suffering, disorder, and all those lower states of being. In a way they have a point because somewhere within them they are aware that they are not new wineskins and so, instinctively, they are afraid of being unable to bear this new life, this new expansion of their consciousness, and also they still feel the need to lead life at a lower level. Those who fear the life of the Spirit do not really know why they fear it but feel, instinctively, that there is something to fear: they will have to give up their old habits. In reality, there is nothing more beautiful than to be able to grasp the spiritual currents of light, strength and joy which come daily to us, to receive this love which constantly transpierces our souls. If we block these currents because of our weaknesses, our thoughts and our negative feelings, it shows that our wineskins are not yet ready to receive the new wine. We have old skins and we must change them.”

“On the central pillar of the sephirotic Tree, Yesod is above Malkuth, and Tiphareth is above Yesod. From this we can deduce that the light of Tiphareth (the Sun) has to pass through Yesod (the Moon) in order to reach Malkuth (Earth). We are speaking here of Malkuth as the symbolic representation of the physical world; Yesod, the psychic world and Tiphareth, the spiritual world. And now we can see the problems that must arise if the state of the psychic world is not sufficiently pure to allow the light of the spiritual world to pass through it.
Unfortunately, this is the case with most people. They complain of feeling no benefits from their spiritual exercises. They pray, they meditate, they try to link themselves to heaven, but they have the impression that none of it does them any good. They feel just as doubtful, disorientated and weak as ever. Sometimes they even feel that their situation is worse than before. All of this is because the light to which they are trying to link themselves encounters too many layers of impurity, formed by their disorderly, undisciplined thoughts and feelings. In this case, not only is it prevented from entering them, but it actually accelerates the process of putrefaction that is going on within them, just as sunlight accelerates the putrefaction of a heap of compost.
Rays of sunlight can reach and illuminate us if our windows are clean, but when they have to penetrate layers of impurities, they trigger a process of putrefaction. And putrefaction produces nauseating smells. If you want to become a worthy receptacle for divine light, your heart must be as transparent as crystal; if it is not, the smell of putrefaction is what awaits you. As long as you have not made up your mind to do any serious work of detachment and purification, you would do better not to approach Initiatic Science.”

“For disciples of Initiatic Science, old age is the best period in life, for their years of searching and inner experience have brought them lucidity, peace, serenity and kindness. If popular opinion is in direct contradiction to this, it is because old age is, in fact, an unhappy time for many people as a result of the way they have lived. They have squandered all their energies in mundane, futile, stupid activities and, when they have almost nothing left and then find themselves debilitated, ill and barren, what can they hope for in their old age?
Of course, even if you lead a sensible life, old age will eventually catch up with you and perhaps illness as well. But those who have done some serious inner work will face these periods with greater strength and serenity and continue to grow spiritually richer.”

“You must understand that there are two poles: there is the ‘you’ that is here and now, with your awareness of yourself, in other words, your lower self, and then there is your higher, sublime self of which you are not yet fully aware. But that self does exist; it lives and is at work within you. You do not yet know just what it is doing, but it is possible for you to picture it in your imagination. From your own lower level you can imagine the glorious Being dwelling within you that is seeking to manifest through you, seeking to recognize his own features shining through the gross, unsubtle material that you are. He knows himself on high, but he wants now to know himself through the medium of the opaque matter of which you are made. If you continue to use your imagination in this way to come ever closer to your higher self, this practice will one day generate such light within you that your consciousness will be released from its present bonds. You will dwell in such light, such radiant splendour, that you will feel yourself really and truly one with that sublime Being, your higher self.
I am not saying this is easy, of course, but it is one of the most powerful and effective exercises you can do. If you can get into the habit of doing it from time to time, your efforts will be richly rewarded. And then, whatever you may be doing, your superconsciousness will always be there with you, because you will have established a bond between you. As long as you remain on the outside of God you are depriving yourself of his gifts; he cannot give them to you because you and he belong to two different worlds, cut off from each other, because you are tuned to different wavelengths. But if you learn to tune in, there will no longer be that great gap between you and God; you will begin to feel that you are someone else, God himself manifesting in you. This is what Jesus meant when he said, ‘My Father and I are one.’”

“A man works when he stops seeking thrills which waste his energies but uses those energies to make other centers function in his brain. Instead of releasing whirlwinds and volcanic eruptions within himself, he keeps his clarity of thought to channel these currents and guide them so that they waken new faculties which will make him a genius, an Initiate, a divinity. That is how he turns heat into light: he replaces pleasure with work and at that moment he experiences real pleasure, a pleasure which, instead of debasing him, uplifts and ennobles him.”

“It is impossible to fill a brimming container without emptying it first. The same applies to human beings: if they do not empty themselves of their bad habits, no qualities will come and dwell inside them. Such is the meaning of renunciation, of ridding ourselves of elements that can harm ourselves or others and replacing them with elements of higher quality. Those who have understood the meaning of renunciation seek to create this essential space within them to attract true wealth.”

“Light is the very matter of creation, and through meditation and concentration we are able to extract a few atoms of light from everything that exists around us so as to integrate them into our own matter. Obviously, we find this light first and foremost in the sun, but it is also in the air that we breathe, in the drinks and food that nourish us every day.
Once we have a little of this light, we have every possibility of increasing it. How? By making it merge with the divine light. This union is what it aspires to above all else. But there is one prerequisite: that the path that leads it to the divine light should be free from all impurities. For impurities prevent the two from uniting. Separate drops of mercury can merge together again, if the surface they are on is perfectly clean, but if there is a tiny amount of dust, they are unable to. The same goes for the light within us. By purifying ourselves, we make the obstacles that separate our light from God’s light disappear, until the day it becomes one with God’s light. Nothing will be able to separate the two again.
This inner light whose only desire is to merge with the divine light is our soul. It has had to take so many paths that it is now covered with earthly dust. But once we have cleared it of all this dust, it will hasten towards God and unite with him for all eternity.”
