What a weekend at @canmorefolkfestival! This pilot year of Out of Office is completely self-funded and was only made possible from the amazing support of local businesses in our community. If you spoke to us at the festival, you’ll have heard us share about how almost every component we brought to life was donated - from our mural boards and cut outs, to paints, to branding - this is what community support looks like. We want to give a very heartfelt thank you to the following people and businesses who made this initiative possible: • DWC Framing for donating their time, labour and materials to assemble our 8x8ft mural board onsite at the folk festival. • Stephen and his fantastic staff at @benjaminmoorecanmore for donating our paint and discounting our supplies. • Ally and Brett from @valleysignanddesign for creating our very cute CNC bear cut out which many of you took photos with. • @cansigninc for creating our banner to help our OOO brand have a presence. • Jim from @defendingawesome for our cute Out of Office stickers to help us spread the word. • Our very own Steph, @mild.side, for creating our branding and website. • The @canmorefolkfest for being open to creating this space for us to try something new and hopefully continue to grow in! • And finally, a big thank you to everyone who visited us and watched us paint, purchased some goods, took photos, had conversations, asked questions, and shared excitement - we can feel the buzz and we are so excited that you’re excited! There are also many other folks who have supported @_ooomf_ through encouragement, advice and helping us get some wind beneath our sails. I’m looking at you @yycbump, @uplift.fest.jasper, @afa.1991 and many, many more. 👀🙏 Our intention for Out of Office is to become a fundable and sustainable model that can eventually support more artists to bring colour to both the folk festival and Canmore. This is what it looks like when we’re Out of Office! We are so excited to kick off our first initiative with @canmorefolkfest this weekend! You can find us onsite live painting and selling a few goodies starting this evening through to Monday. We’d love to meet you, chat public art, hear about what performers you’re most excited to see! And of course, please snap some pics with our mural boards and tag us! Why do murals matter? Murals have the ability to transform everyday spaces. They create moments of connection, storytelling, and make art part of everyday life. They invite people to pause, explore, and see familiar spaces in new ways, and ultimately, they create community. OOOMF exists because we believe public art has the power to strengthen communities, support artists, and contribute to a more colourful Canmore. Her work under @mild.side is rooted in curiosity, storytelling, and creating meaningful visual experiences. From our earliest conversations, Steph understood that OOOMF wasn’t just about murals, it was about building something welcoming, artist-led, and connected to place. Together we’re combining our creative forces to create a festival that feels fun, approachable, and distinctly Bow Valley. Every festival starts somewhere. For us, it starts with two artists, two mural panels, and a partnership with @canmorefolkfest. We’re approaching this first year as a pilot project. Rather than trying to launch a large festival all at once, we’re taking the time to learn what works, listen to our community, and build a model that is sustainable, fundable, and designed specifically for the Bow Valley. Public art comes with unique challenges, from funding and wall access to community engagement and artist compensation. We believe those challenges are worth working through and we’re learning as we go. This is our long-term vision: Year One Launch the pilot during the Canmore Folk Music Festival with live mural painting, conversations with the community, and a chance to begin imagining what’s possible together. Year Two Expand to include additional artists, community mural projects, interactive painting experiences, and fair compensation for participating artists. Years Three to Five Grow beyond the festival grounds by bringing murals to walls throughout Canmore, creating more opportunities for artists, and establishing OOOMF as a lasting part of the Bow Valley. OOOMF began as an idea I couldn’t stop thinking about. I’m Cecelia Leddy, an artist and muralist based in Canmore, working under the artist name @teenybotanist. I studied as a fine artist at @ocaduniversity in Toronto, and moved into Arts & Cultural Management, and have now worked in arts administration in the Bow Valley for over a decade. I’ve had the opportunity to paint murals with @yycbump, @edmontonmuralfest, @uplift.fest.jasper, as well as support artists on the other end through the administrative side of my full-time work where I run community events in Canmore. Through those experiences I’ve seen how much public art can shape a community. OOOMF is a passion project that brings my two worlds together. It’s an opportunity to create space for artists, celebrate creativity in the Bow Valley, and imagine what a community-led mural festival could become. As an artist who works full-time in arts and culture, I’m in a unique position to see some of the gaps and challenges that artists face in our community, and the potential for growth. This first year is intentionally small. We’re listening, learning, building relationships, and testing ideas. Our hope is that this pilot becomes the foundation for something that grows with our community for years to come. We are both artists and OOOMF is what we choose to build when we’re out of office.
