‘A Wayside Halt for One (a Terminus to Many)’
for the 60th Central Glass Company Competition, First Prize

420 × 594 mm, ink on paper, digital layout
12 models, 119 x 119 mm in plan, PVA plastic and quartz-sand primer

This work is an attempt at existentialist architectural speculation. Architecture is not merely an art of building, but an art of life — an art of organising time within space, and space within time. The space shown in the plan and the semi-perspective section is a product of imagination. Time here is uncertain and depends upon the visitor. As in life, it is not entirely clear how one arrives. Some spend only minutes here, and some millennia, as in a very deep dream. Equally unpredictable is the manner of departure.

The drawing imagines an inland rural railway halt set among mountains beside a reservoir. The ensemble is composed of a garden, a plateau with a small station building, and a silo by the water’s edge.

This week I picked up a copy of A+U 26:03 (No. 666) “Living in London”, guest-edited by @_clancyandrew and @marwaelm_bark. A finely judged and generous selection of works.

By a coincidence I am not inclined to treat as accidental—given that I, too, am living in London—my entry for the Central Glass International Architectural Design Competition appears towards the end of the issue.

For me, participation in Japanese competitions tends to mark significant points in my professional trajectory. The previous was the winning entry for the Nisshin Kogyo competition back in 2017, when I concluded my work with Alexander Brodsky and began my subsequent collaboration with @mikheil_mikadze as a partner at @xopapraxis (2017–2023).

It is therefore of particular significance that my 2025 entry for the Central Glass Competition was awarded First Prize and received a number of generous and attentive comments from the jury, for which I remain sincerely grateful.

The competition feature itself includes a number of strong works—particularly that of @galichyan, whom I first met at the Moscow School of Architecture / @march.school, where I had the honour of co-leading @studio_viavia between 2020 and 2024.

I would also like to thank @takeroshimazakiarchitects, whose subtle Niwa House is published in this issue, and @massatmet for the invitation to speak about my competition entry this past February at @ldnmet_architecture.

A more detailed—though not necessarily clearer—account of the project can be found on my website (link in bio). by @_oyat_

For several years, across each of our disciplines of storytelling - film and architecture - the artist-architect Oyat Shukurov @_oyat_ and I have been exploring the mnemonic space of urban Tajikistan.

This crossover has led to an exciting ongoing collaboration examining how the moving image can reactivate the memory of a lost urban space, drawing on oneiric logic and Persianate storytelling, through the typological and compositional examination of the Rohat teahouse - the public space built in Dushanbe in 1958 and demolished in 2025.

We are pleased that some of the results of our practice-based research were recently presented at the University of Cambridge, at the conference ‘Situated Imagination and Imaginaries of Urban Futures’, which explored how situated imaginations and imaginaries are formed, contested, and translated across politics and space in relation to urban futures. @arch_cambridge

Still fishing in the murky spring waters of the Varzob river. On the hook: reflective pools, in-situ concrete walkways, ravines, North-Eastern Chord remnants, grass patches and rubber compounds, architectons, hilltop telecom antennae.
