ara contemporary is pleased to share installation views of ‘Co-Presence’, a solo exhibition by Iwan Effendi, presented in collaboration with The Back Room, Kuala Lumpur.Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, and puppetry, Iwan Effendi explores the porous boundaries between the self and its performance. ‘In Co-Presence’, the body emerges as both subject and vessel, where distinctions between puppeteer and puppet, consciousness and physical form, begin to blur.Known for his distinctive figures with rounded heads, bead-like eyes, and restrained expressions, Iwan constructs spaces that oscillate between innocence and unease. Cut-out drawing collages by Iwan Effendi (b. 1979, Jogjakarta), currently showing in his solo exhibition Co-Presence at the gallery until July 12, 2026. Open throughout the weekend from 12 to 6pm. —A professional puppeteer with Papermoon Puppet Theatre, Iwan uses his independent art practice as a space to experiment with and incubate ideas, stories, and characters that may later find their way into Papermoon’s productions. Although his drawings often possess a childlike sensibility and whimsical charm, they are undercut by a darker psychological edge, suggesting deeper reflections on human nature, morality, and the coexistence of innocence and evil.—Artworks details: (1) In the Woods, 2026. The Back Room is proud to announce our latest gallery collaboration with Jakarta-based ara contemporary, presenting the solo exhibition of Iwan Effendi (@_iwaneffendi_). Titled 𝙲𝚘-𝙿𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎, the exhibition will be the artist’s second time exhibiting in Kuala Lumpur. He is currently one of the leading names in Indonesian contemporary art, having exhibited in galleries and participated in residencies all around the world. Iwan Effendi is based in Jogjakarta, where he also serves as the co-founder of @papermoonpuppet. Under Papermoon, Iwan has become renowned for his distinct style of depicting figures, featuring large, round heads with beadlike eyes and tiny, worried mouths, giving off the impression of childlike innocence and a mix of wonder and fear. His beloved, larger-than-life puppets (known as boneka in Indonesian) have delighted audiences with their unique appearances, impressive mechanisms for movement, and immersive set designs and stories. He extends the immersiveness of puppet theatre to exhibition-making, creating sculptures and murals to accompany his artworks. 𝙲𝚘-𝙿𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 will be no different, and will feature a site-specific, mixed-media charcoal mural alongside several new paintings on canvas.
