The Moon. šŸŒ•šŸŽ The moon, It watches as it creeps. It hovers high, Just as it reaps. Its face wide open, As it looks down. Our eyes wide shut, Upon our sleep. The moon, It gives the dream, We sleep. The stars around, In darkness deep. Watching the spirits, Float and creak. The moon, Often rises, From the skies so bleak. Where silhouettes of witches, Cackle and speak. A cauldron bubbles, Wing of bat, And birds beak. The moon it shivers, As it freaks. Goblins and monsters, Created incomplete. Born from imaginations, All unique. The moon, It shadows and it sheaks. This Halloween, In its autumnal sheet. Ghosts and ghouls, Will make it hard to speak. The moon. It shimmers, Through curtained sleep. As walkers crawl, Crave and creep. Trick or treaters, Mercy deep. The moon it guides them, When darkness weeps. 31st October, 2026 Paul Howells #paulhowellspoetry #poetrycommunity #moon #halloween #anenglishmaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
Manā€™s Best Friend For most of my life Iā€™ve never really been a dog person. But then came Kaplan. One of the many greatest things that has happened to our my beautiful triangle family. With Kaplan I found what the phrase ā€œManā€™s Best Friendā€ really meant. Kaplan youā€™ve stepped up when others stepped down. You took me for who I am, instead of who you wanted me to be, and I would never ever want to be without you. I love you my boy. šŸ¾šŸŽšŸ¾ #kaplan #dogsofinstagram #myboy #family #anenglishmaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
As we vastly approach the end of the month. October has been a massive learning curve for me, and with my often stressed anxious state which has on occasion raised its ugly head over the last few weeks. Time has allowed me to reflect, and create the odd poem. Due to being very busy at the moment, I have allowed my creativity drop, consistency has been inconsistent, hence why I have so many unfinished works. I have however finished this poem, about fading friendships. I hope it resonates with you. šŸŽ When Friendships Fadeā€¦ šŸŽ My words fall flat, Without saying a word. My words are my own, But are often left unheard. I just need a pick me up, A friendship with some gratitude, No words of wisdom, Just an ear with some truth. I know my words are often garbled, And I take the long way around, But this is who I am, Now youā€™ve knocked me to the ground. I know I can waffle, And often tell a story. But this is with good intentions, I never want to take the glory. So Iā€™ll stop now, And wonā€™t take up any more of your time, You wonā€™t get anymore wasted minutes, Or words in pros, sentiment or rhyme. So if you need me, Yes Iā€™ll be there. But just because my boundaries are back in place now, It doesnā€™t mean I donā€™t care. I know all of this is nothing to you, And you probably havenā€™t given it a second thought, But the way you treat my story, Is a life lesson Iā€™ve been taught. So Iā€™ll put up my defences, And put myself in the light. Invest in myself completely, Knowing Iā€™ll be alright. 6th October, 2026. #paulhowellspoetry #poetrycommunity #friendship #friendships #anenglishmaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
Rose Tinted Narcissist šŸŽ Different stories, On different sides. No more secrets, Only lies. Some just wallow, Until they die. Me? Iā€™d rather face it, Than live a lie. Just in pieces, Your brew is thick, Spoon fed narcissism, You make me sick. Nothing changes, And neither do you. Play your violin, Beg and choose. So you just sit there, And just summarise, Pick fault with all those, That you despise. You push away life, That comes as no surprise. And all thatā€™s passed you, With their goodbyes. Your life it hangs, Festers and waits. What more do you want? For goodness sake. I look and check in, With my ā€œrose tinted specsā€. And see your wallowed words, Written with no self respect You speak ill of all others, And speak ill of the dead. Your words they just cut, And Iā€™d rather forget. So as Iā€™ve moved on, Moving on from your lies. My life is my challenge, As I roll the dice. Happy Birthday to my best mate, and brother from another mother, Darren. I know itā€™s a long while since Iā€™ve seen you, but youā€™re never too far from my thoughts. I hope you have a great day. STOP šŸŽ Stop! Stop trying, When you know it wonā€™t work. Donā€™t keep going on. In the places with glass walls, In the places where you donā€™t belong. Stop, Donā€™t carry on. Your character is sometimes wasted, In the theatre that is life. There are other stages to tread, Other places where you belong. Stop! Find your people. Or let them find you. Put yourself out there. In any place, You choose. Stop! Find the like minded, The ones that fit your skin, And hug you, From the outside in. The ones who create, Beauty and not drama. Not hatred just laughter. One love, From the here on after. Stop! Save your heart, For those you love. The ones you need. And donā€™t give up. You donā€™t need large circles, Or constant social settings, Just your self belief, And your inner peace. Stop! Be yourself, For longer than just a while, Feel the sun on your face, And open up your eyes, And see the beauty of the sky. Instead of just wondering why? Stop, Remember your self worth. And that youā€™re good enough. Live your life, In the way you need, Take a moment and breathe. And protect your inner peace. Stop. Stop. #stop #paulhowellspoetry #poetrycommunity #selfworth #anenglishmaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
Happy Anniversary to my one and only. The love of my life. My heart, soul and world, and mother of our beautiful daughter, Autumn Grace. The one person I love more than @cisk @guinness Michael Caine, @cwmbakery Shakespeare, @gylesbrandreth (Just!) & @therosebudpodcast My beautiful wifey @_mrs_baldy 15 years together including 12 years married. Wifey, you would have done less time for clocking me over the head with a medal the size of a frying pan (That you deserve!) and shoving me under the patio in the gardenā€¦ šŸ˜‚ But I know you wouldnā€™t have things any other way. And truth be told, neither would I. You see Wifey. I thank god everyday that you came into my life, and as I look back on our journey together. The highs and the lows, and the occasional rocky roads, itā€™s plain to see that you saved me, Wifey. You came into my life when I needed you. And itā€™s also true of me to say that your beauty, your love, your big caring heart, your patience (way too many times) , your humour, optimism, positivity, and ā€œawesomeā€ light, have saved me when I have been at my lowest. When others have turned and walked away, you could have done the same. But you didnā€™t, and I thank you for that. Iā€™ll always be forever grateful. TOGETHER, WE are a true testament of what a marriage truly is. And I love you. Always have and always will. You are my world, and in the words of @tomcruise in Jerry Maguire, ā€œYou Complete Me.ā€ Happy Anniversary, Wifey. Forever Yours, Baldy. ā¤ļøšŸŽ #happyanniversary #wifey #baldy #baldyandthebear #anenglishmaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
My mum is often in my thoughts. Especially today. Today my mum would have been 82, and to coincide with this occasion it would have also have been my mum and dadā€™s 60th wedding anniversary, had they have slummed life out together, and made things work. So as the day progresses, and many a cup of tea has been drunk, Iā€™ll be raising a cup of tea later to not just my late mother, but also my late parents, as itā€™s the one day I can actually think of when they were perhaps at their happiestā€¦ In this photo, on the day that was meant to be. I know I wasnā€™t around then, and I have no memory of them together. (Perhaps thatā€™s a good thing), but what I do know is that at some point in time they loved each other, and though l was an ā€œAfterthoughtā€, I know I was loved by them. Occasionally Iā€™ll get a sign from my Dad, be it a Pickfords removal van, or something about the RAF. There are perhaps some other signs I may have missed but not intentionally. With my mum however itā€™s a completely different ball game. A Wiltshire Farm Foods van doing its rounds, or a song I knew she loved. On this occasion ā€œClose To Youā€ by The Carpenters. Played at random last night on my iTunes, and then the first thing I heard on @bbcradio2 with @djsaracox this morning. Signs are bizarre if you believe in them, but mean so much when you know that loved ones who have passed are near. Watching, and maybe offering some sort of guidance now, that you often wished you had when they were here. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Mum. Youā€™re loved and always missed. Love always. ā¤ļøšŸŽā¤ļø #happyheavenlybirthdayā¤ļø #mum #family #anenglishmaninsouthwales #ayorkshiremaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
World Mental Health Day šŸŽ Today is world mental health day. A subject close to my heartā€¦ There is still a lot to be done in the world when it comes to mental health. There is not enough support, and more importantly no where near enough kindness. Iā€™ve not only seen this in my own experiences but also in others too. I wrote this poem earlier in the year, about a persons struggles when it comes to mental health. This poem is an accurate reflection of what I have been through when it has come to my own personal battles. I really do hope it encourages more people to talk. Much love. šŸŽ Warrior šŸŽ Feel the armour beneath my skin, While I choose my battles, From here on in. My mind, my shield, In war protect. My heart and soul he did neglect. In the mirror I see him not me. The one that time made, The dark version that I see. All his baggage, Iā€™ve seen before. Played all his cards for me to implore. My sword and my scabbard, I clutch with my hands, As I race to my face under my demand. To face yourself, On your own battleground. The wolves are unleashed, I can hear the sound. To fight with myself, I have to go through hell, A time to conquer and a story to tell. So I fight this foe, A darker side of me. Heā€™s riddled with others hurtful words and their jealousy. The flames of hell, Engulf through me, A tortured curse with anxiety. The battle within, Was on sacred ground. I toss and turn, I was lost now found. I beat and I bruise internally, Face all of my demons, So that I can be free. I out think and outsmart, All that has passed / past. To move on and be strong, so I can last. I drag all of my demons, To express my will. With the light of the sun I am fulfilled. The demons they fade, With my resilience and love. I now know I am worthy and that I am enough. The fight and the battle, Is over and done. I now move forward, Because I know that Iā€™ve won. My armour has healed me, In my mind and my soul. My life is my glory Iā€™ll never let go. Blank September šŸŽ A journal, with a blank page. A canvas blank, Without anger or rage. A sheet, With no words, And without feeling. A month gone fast, As I get older with age. A book, With no focus, A life in the balance, And no direction. Just my past, Living in the present. All memories laid bare, Under dissection. A page, Empty and unbroken. Lifeless with no letters. Written, Read, Or spoken. No thoughts processed, With ink on page, My thoughts are now relics, Gathering dust with age. Yesterdays post was about how much I need to write and how September has been a busy month. Itā€™s always busy this time of year, but I wouldnā€™t have it any other way. However I will always have time to write and create. I managed to piece this poem together last week, while on a dog walk. Merely taking in my surroundings, with a few minor tweaks here and there. Itā€™s no secret that Autumns not only one of my favourite names belonging to one of my favourite people, but itā€™s also my favourite season and by far and larges the most inspiring. Beautiful Autumn (Part One) A greyness gathers, A cavas blank. Golden sprinkles, Leaves falling fast. A season of patterns, Live in the sky, Birds dodging leaves, They swoop and dive. The wind it echoes, Around my ears, Whispers autumnal blessings, Iā€™m reduced to tears. The air it hovers, As it hollows. The crow it caws, For a new tomorrow. The trees, Like brushstrokes in the sky. They bow and they wave, As I go by. The distant landscape, My path leans in. I embark on my journey, With wind on skin. An invisible force, Pushes nature within. The leafy ground scatters, With an autumnal grin. Passing people, On foot and by car. The shop doors open, Until night time starts. Children wrapped up, By the school yard bin. Play time until the bell sounds, Ring a ding, ding. A sight to survey, Voices they shroud. A pleasant passing greeting, A smile so proud. This Autumn poetry, Is a portrait of words. A perfect time to breathe, To live and to learn. Hereā€™s a throwback to something I shared a year ago from the brilliant @mattzhaig In truth, I donā€™t think I have related to this as a whole until now. Since I returned to writing poetry back in January after a twenty year hiatus, itā€™s helped me with my mental health, my self expression, my understanding of my own emotions, and of those around me, and last but not at all least its helped me creatively. Just getting my thoughts and feelings out creatively is something of a joy to me personally that I canā€™t even begin to describe. I mean I probably could, but without sounding too derogatory, not many of you would even understand. It may have come to the attention of those following, nosing, or supportingā€¦ that my poetry posts have been very far and few as of late. Since January I have written, or collated new ideas for hundreds of new poems. A lot are yet to be finished, and dozens more to be re written, or edited. September, was a silent month for me creatively, not because I was uninspired or lost my spark, but because my focus was elsewhere. However, I did succumb to the odd creative idea here and there, many of which are noted, filed and shelved for future creative exploration! What I have noticed while not writing poetry is that my feelings were suppressed and not expressed. My thoughts are overwhelmingly at times, over loading this fifty year old mind, with nowhere to be channeled. This has resulted in my frustrations resurfacing, revolving around everyday irritations. Revolving around various people and in various places. Writing helps me. It lightens the load. It makes me think clearly. It makes me realise the important things in my life. And itā€™s a self investment that Iā€™ve neglected for far too long. It makes me happy. So please do keep following, snooping, supporting and / or watching. New poems, ideas, material, and creativity will be coming your way very soon. After allā€¦ we are now in the Autumn. My most inspiring season ā€¦ šŸŽ #writingcommunity #writing #creativity #anenglishmaninsouthwales ayorkshiremaninsouthwales by @_paul_howells_
