Yesterday I went for a solo adventure into my backyard. After a long season where it didn’t feel reasonable to head out on my own due to the avalanche danger, it was refreshing to experience the wilderness in that way. I just walked out my back door and linked up with the trail system that heads into the peaks behind our house.

The idea of car free adventures has been in the back of my mind for a while and is something l’d like to do more of this summer. Sure, i could’ve driven the first 2000 vertical feet to a trailhead and mostly avoided post-holing through patchy snow in tight evergreens... I literally broke a ski pole while schwacking through deadfall so maybe I’ll plan the route slightly better next time. But it’s extra satisfying to start and end a day on my back porch, no drive required. by @_pitrack

We took a shot at this beauty yesterday. Long story short, it didn’t go. We topped out psyched for the great snow conditions and perfect weather, but after billy goating up and down both summit ridges and not finding any entrance to the face that didn’t involve sketchy down-climbing over steep, loose, scary rock bands, we made the call to go back the way we came.

Don’t get me wrong, I would’ve loved to ski it, but it also felt good to come up against my limits and turn around, confident in our decision. It was still a great day in the mountains and skiing pow on the magic carpet ride back to the car took the sting out. The mountain will still be there, and I’ll be here too waiting for a bigger snow year to fill it in.

Also to the backcountry ski community who has abandoned the snow and absconded to the desert, or baja, or wherever (quitters)... it is still very much winter up high! Go skiing 😝 by @_pitrack
