Oriental Sonata: Statement on the First Movement

For me, the essence of classical music lies in giving sound to what is abstract and universal. The Western sonata form reflects the dialectical mind of the Hellenic world, while in the East such a dialectical framework does not exist.

To compose my Second Symphony, I undertook a six-month journey of research: observing native birds in Kashan, studying ancient sound archetypes, and searching for the phenomenological patterns of the Eastern mind. Out of this exploration emerged a new scale—D, D♯, F, G, G♯, B, C, D—shaped by birdsong. From the very beginning, this scale breaks with conventional tonality and offers a new conception of diatonicism.

Unlike the Western sonata, which thrives on opposition, development, and resolution, the “Oriental Sonata” proposes another path: one of non-dialectical coexistence, suspension, and the gradual emergence of insight. This insight carries no historical or theological weight; it is born in solitude, in reflection, and at times, in intuition.

In a meeting of philosophical insight and sonic storytelling, Symphony No. 1 emerges as an auditory exploration of cultural resonance and transformation. Drawing on the chromatic modes born in Kashan and infused with contrapuntal heritage, this work bridges North American tonal textures with the ancient musical soul of the Middle East. It is a journey through the lens of "otherness" and "compassion"—where sound becomes a living dialogue between civilizations.
