Come along to the last of our exhibition openings for Faces and Threads - a participatory arts research project that explores how marginalised communites feel about online climate debates. This exhibition brings together the experience of the entire project into a narrative about how intersecting, and at times competing, existential crises affect the climate debate - it's been an interesting ride! We'll be screening five experimental art films that speak to the project in different ways. Opening 1 Sept 5.30-8pm at the Basement Arts Project, Beeston, south Leeds. All welcome. by @_proforma_

♠️♦️Faces and Threads❤️♣️
An exhibition in four parts:

Part Three~
SNUG at Crowcroft Park
Launches 24th July

Faces and Threads is a community arts project taking place in Longsight, Manchester and Beeston, Leeds. Led by Dr Lone Sorensen in collaboration with artist Parham Ghalamdar, the project has transformed climate misinformation into large Tarot-inspired banners.

Residents in each city were invited to respond to social media content about climate change, adding to these banners and capturing the emotions, experiences, and voices of these communities.

These voices have turned the banners into a form of protest and displaying them outside during one of the hottest summers on record highlights the urgent need for climate justice.

The artwork here was presented at Longsight Art Space between 10th-23rd July and visitors are invited to paint onto these banners this evening. Music tonight is provided by Fossil Heads 🎶🎼🎵

Faces and Threads, an arts-based participatory research project with communities in Beeston, Leeds, and Longsight, Manchester, opened this week. It's been an amazing experience working with these communities and coming to understand how they feel about online climate debates. We've had a bit of - most likely unintended - damage to the work since then but we see this as part of its story and conversation with the space. We're looking at ways to creatively mend it and hope it will soon be back in the pocket sculpture park On The Corner. by @_proforma_

Basement Arts Space
Launches 9th July

Faces and Threads is a community arts project taking place in Beeston, Leeds and Longsight, Manchester. Led by Dr Lone Sorensen in collaboration with artist Parham Ghalamdar, the project has transformed climate misinformation into large Tarot-inspired banners.

Residents in each city were invited to respond to social media content about climate change, adding to these banners and capturing the emotions, experiences, and voices of these communities.

These voices have turned the banners into a form of protest and displaying them outside during one of the hottest summers on record highlights the urgent need for climate justice.

Over the coming months, the banners will be exposed to this extreme weather and we will see changes to these works over time. We wonder what will be obscured and revealed in these banners between heat and rain; day and night; sun and moon?

The artwork here will be presented inside Basement Arts Project from 1st September.

What does it feel like to watch climate debates rage online and wonder if your voice belongs in them? That's the question at the heart of Faces & Threads - a project turning University of Leeds research on climate and social media into art made with local people, right here in Beeston.

Announcing Hannelore Smith as Curator’s Choice for 𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓮𝓻𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓽 and recipient of the inaugural Alfred Cohen Art Prize! 🏆

Hannelore’s sculptures suggest the many industrial communication towers around Norfolk and are activated by radio broadcasts as audience members move around All Saints Church. Bringing together many different themes within 𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓮𝓻𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓽, I was particularly struck by the aesthetic and aural qualities within these artworks. They create an intimate yet immersive experience within the wider exhibition space 🙌
