It's utterly mind blowing that we are here now.

🦴 "Arno"

Circa 1839

⚜️ Horatio Greenough (American, 1805–1852)

🖌️ Medium: Made of Marble

⚜️ Boston native, Greenough was America's first important sculptor in marble. Inspired by painter Washington Allston, whose work is displayed nearby, Greenough traveled to Italy to seek professional training. In Rome, he apprenticed with Danish master Bertel Thorwaldsen, among the era's leading Neoclassical sculptors. In 1828 Greenough's Florence #studio became popular for fellow traveling American artists and writers. Quite a few visitors met Greenough's darling greyhound Arno, named after the river that runs through Florence. Greenough captures the realistic sculptures of dogs, popular in ancient Rome.

⚜️ Dogs have almost always been depicted to symbolize guidance, protection, #loyalty, fidelity, faithfulness, alertness, and #love. As dogs became more domesticated, they were shown as companion #animals, often #painted sitting on a lady's lap.

🍄 Grey Milkcap (Lactarius vietus)

🔺Lactarius means producing milk (lactating) - a reference to the milky latex that is exuded from the gills of milkcap fungi when they are cut or torn. The specific epithet vietus means shrunken or wrinkled.

🔻Growing mainly under birch trees, or wet mossy woodland areas.

🔺 Typically grey, flattened-convex cap, can very in shape, spore print is usually white, but can also vary--strong and acrid to taste when raw.

🐾 Ｍａｎｔｉｃｏｒｅ- 1951
Medium: pen and colored ink
©️ Unknown

🔸 Coming from Persian origin, where it's name was "man-eater" from early Middle Persian مارتیا martya "man" (as in human) and خوار xwar- "to eat"). The English term "manticore" was borrowed from Latin "mantichora", itself derived from the Greek rendering of the Persian name, "μαρτιχώρα", "martichora".

🔸 It was said to have been an unconquerable, known for its incredible speed and strange but magnificent features.

🔸Typically 10ft long and weighing about 1,000lbs, having a head of a human(whom to me resembles a bit of Salvador Dali), equipped with three rows of shark teeth, body of a lion, and a tail of venomous spikes similar to a porcupine --some depictions have a scorpion-like tail.

🔸The creature had a special appetite for human flesh, famed for eating it's victims whole and leaving nothing behind.
