‘Quint’

Last winter I’d recently finished reading the autobiographies of Mike Doyle (Morning Glass) and Greg Noll, (Da Bull, Life over the edge) which painted a very different picture to the surfing we know today.

Most notably, their equipment caught my attention. They talked about great shapers of the time; Dale Velzy, Pat Curren, a young Rennie Yater and other marine craftsmen. All of the boards they made were embellished with elaborate woodwork, artwork, and personality. And they all still managed to Chuck them over the lip somehow, with success.

In delving into making a board with the common dimensions of that time, shaping it with vintage 50’s hand-tools, and recently riding it, I’m sure I’ve come close to making a time machine

You could remake a 50’s car, but the road you’d drive it on would still be 2026. However, taking a board like this into the water, at the undeveloped, secret places we still covet, alone with the kelp and the grey seals, the experience is still the same. And quite moving

-

I was lucky enough on my 30th birthday that the folks at work (@matthewcoxetc ) put a fair few sheckles in my card, and in stead of being ‘completely’ selfish with this gift, I used it to buy the materials I made the board from.
(thanks guys!)
To remember this help in the build, in late spring I picked & pressed flowers & leaves from around the workshop, using them in the deck lamination.

‘Quint’ is made from a blank with two 1” aromatic cedar stringers, the speckled foam of which was leftover from insulating the shed in the background of these pictures.
The 1 1/2” tail block is also cedar.

The lamination was full Volan cloth; an era-correct material for the board, and I’ve used 200gsm woven flax cloth on the rails. Bio epoxy was used as the laminating resin, rather than era-correct iso resin just because of its toxicity.

The fin’s a glass-on pivot/hatchet made from oak & sycamore, braced by two 8mm sapele inserts around the fin tenons.

One feature I’ve employed is a gore-tex vent plug to counter air expansion through thermal gain, an issue with high volume eps boards.
