Kia ora koutou, introducing Rei Collective member Lucy Tyndal. Lucy, raised in Wharau / Chateris Bay, has developed a whakairo / carving skillset after completing our 12-week Whatu Kura Toi programme. knowing her turangawaewae and applying tikanga and kawa to her creative practice, Lucy has created quality mahi toi for the benefit of her descendants.
Lucy was born and raised in Ōtautahi, the surrounding mountains, and sea of Whakaraupō. Recently she has been developing her love of whakaairo, born from a shard of Tōtara on a mountain path that her father pointed out to her as a child. Her equal love of painting focuses on portraits, landscapes, and often around themes of distance and loss, hidden shadows, and transition. by @_reigallery

Kia ora koutou, introducing Rei Collective member Jono Stone who is a local artist, born in Waiharakeke (Blenheim) and moving to call Ōtautahi home in 2023 after stints living in various cities across Aotearoa, Australia and Canada.
Studying and pursuing a career in Graphic design, Jono’s explored the world of digital arts, however, in recent years followed a natural gravitation back to his roots in traditional mediums.
As a Yogi and Taoist, his art is heavily influenced by: nature, connection, the exploration of consciousness and spirituality. With these values considered, it’s no surprises Jono was drawn to toi Māori and the Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata kaupapa. Under co-founder; Jon Jeet’s guidance, he’s learnt to carve and now teaches wānangas alongside
Jon and other kaiako. Jono believes carving taonga is a therapeutic and spiritual practice for all involved which fuels his desire to dive deeper and share it with the world.
*Note: All taonga Jono carves is authentic Aotearoa greenstone correctly sourced through his kaiako/mentor; Jon Jeet. For every taonga made an additional piece is carved and gifted to Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata; helping connect the community through Mātauranga Māori.

Kia Ora koutou. introducing our Rei Collective member Angus Goodwin who was instrumental in establishing the Rei kaupapa. Thank you Angus for all of your mahi and support ❤️🖖🏾

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa,
Ko Takitimu te māunga
Ko Wairaki o te awaawa i te kāuri
Ko Whakatipu Waimāori te roto
Nō Murihiku ahau
He tangata ahau ki te tautoko Te Tiriti
Ko Ōhinehou tōku kāinga ināianei
Ko Linda Goodwin toku ingoa
Nō reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa
Linda Goodwin (aka Angus) is a metalsmith, who lives and works in Ōhinehou/ Lyttelton. She grew up next to a coal mine in the foothills of the Takitimu mountain range in Southland. Her mother was a sheep farmer, loved music, and encouraged the arts rather than toys (we had none). Angus always loved fine detail (she sketched and was the certificate writer at school), always wanted to be a jeweller, but there were no apprenticeship opportunities when she left school. She travelled the world and returned home to gain a Batchelor of Arts in Psychology & Education at the University of Canterbury, and a Masters of Social Science with First Class Honours at the University of Waikato. Angus’s studies focused on operationalising Te Tiriti o Waitangi within the context of public health and community development. For over 20 years, she dedicated her learnings to work with Māori with a focus on improving whānau wellbeing.
It was the Canterbury earthquakes that changed her direction, and in 2016 Angus completed a Certificate in Contemporary Jewellery under the tutelage of Katrina Brehaut and Monique Connell at Hagley College, Christchurch. She joined the Silversmiths’ Guild of Canterbury and participated in a string of local exhibitions, winning the ‘Malvern Business Merit Award’ at the Darfield Artweek in 2021 and ‘Peoples’ Choice Award’ for the Silversmiths’ Guild of Canterbury in the same year. Her work is now in several galleries including Oxford Gallery Toi o Waimakariri, and Pea Sea Art Gallery (Port Chalmers), and she is a member of the Rei Collective in Lyttelton. by @_reigallery

Kia ora koutou, introducing our Rei Collective member, Kaiwhakairo Pounamu / pounamu carver, kaiako and mentor Mark Stewart.

Ko Ngōngōtahā me Hautanoa ōku maunga
Ko Waingaehe me Waitakeo ōku awa
Ko Rotoruanui-a-Kahumatamomoe tōku roto
Ko Te Arawa me Horouta ōku waka
Ko Ngāti Whakaue me Ngāti Porou ōku iwi
Ko Ngāti Te Roro-o-te-rangi me Te Whānau a Te Aotawarirangi ōku hapū
Ko Ōtautahi tōku kāinga inaianei
Ko Mark Stewart tōku ingoa

With a background in dairy farming and commercial roofing, Mark fell upon art as an outlet while recovering from a back injury.
Picking up carving chisels and working on his first patu ignited a desire to learn about each pattern, their meanings, the whakapapa of the wood, what iwi use what patterns, which then extended into a want to delve into his own whakapapa.

Drawing, wood and pounamu carving are his preferred methods, taking inspiration from his whakapapa, whānau and his journey thus far. His goal is to showcase his culture and with every art-piece made, he imagines a small piece of our culture is being shared with someone to display as they see fit.

I began my business Potene Designs - a name derived from my great-great-great-great Grandfather, Tamati Riini Potene in August 2022 and since then I have been lucky enough to find mentors that have played a huge part in expanding my artistic abilities.

You can view and purchase my mahi through my website potenedesigns.co.nz

You can follow my creative process on both Facebook and Instagram.

He toi whakairo he mana tangata.

The integrity of one’s character is seen in what they produce.

Kia ora koutou. Introducing Rei Collective member and Ōtoromiro / Governors Bay resident Russ Harris. Russ was an Army brat until his father left the Army to be a teacher at Horowhenua College in Levin. His teen years were spent in Levin in The North Island.
Russ's whakapapa spans back five generations to poor immigrants who came to this country seeking a better life than they had in the UK. In the broad scheme, Scots/Irish ancestry on both sides of his family.
Russ left Aotearoa when I was nineteen to travel with the hippies initially to anywhere but I ended up in Mid-Wales in the UK. He lived there for forty years, a place that has a lot of similarities to Aotearoa, both were colonised, both attempts were made to destroy the culture by destroying the language.
Russ ended his working life teaching Art, Design and Technology in a high school in Mid Wales. He did this for twenty two years. In his young life he worked at any job but he also set about learning and developing the skills for self sufficiency and sustainable living. These skills he brought to his design lessons in school.
Russ was always from New Zealand/ Aotearoa and returned here 7 years ago when he had finished teaching. Now was his time, time to explore his own particular creative abilities.
"I gain a lot of my inspiration from the people around me and from the environment here in the harbour. I paint, draw, write, make music and print. I do not know where this part of the journey will take me but more than anything, I like the journey".
