If you knew me, you knew Lola. She was full of spunk, loved to hide in the trunks of trees, McDonald’s French fries, and loved any and everyone who loved on her. I remember bringing her home in the third grade. She fit in my palm, I carried her in my hoodie pocket, and asked to keep her. Mama said no… well, we see how that worked out. As much as she complained about Lo, we all knew she secretly loved her. I never thought about what things would be like without her. She watched me go through elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. It’s crazy to think I’ve spent more of my life with her than without. Lola was my girl. I can still hear her distinct pitter-patter through the house and her kerklunks up the stairs. I’m still in denial she’s gone but at peace knowing she is no longer in any pain. We love you and will miss you forever, Lola Girl. I will find you in every lifetime. I hope you chase all the cats over the rainbow bridge💜🌈 by @_rileygoode

I don’t just love September because sapphire is my birthstone, I get presents, it’s football season, it’s my anniversary, or it’s my cat’s birthday. I love September because I’m still here to celebrate all of those things.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. If you would’ve told me a few years ago that I would still be here, I wouldn’t have believed you. But I’m glad I believed the people who believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself.

It’s not always smiles, laughs, and happy moments. There are still hard days. But I’ve grown to realize that if you just hang on through the hard ones, you get to experience the good ones too.

I still can’t stomach thinking about the feelings my family and friends felt when they received that call. I think about the friendships I lost because they didn’t agree with or understand the feelings I was experiencing. There truly is so much bad in the world, but there is so much good too and I’m grateful I stayed long enough to experience more of it.

So call your friends. Call your family. Hug your people. Check on the ones you love. And most importantly, have those hard conversations. You never truly know what someone is carrying behind the smiles and laughs.

I can’t thank my friends and family enough for the love and reassurance they’ve given me, or the doctors and therapists who sat with me, listened to me, and helped me figure out my new “normal.”

And I’m thankful for God, who I’ve built a stronger relationship with and who has shown me that His Word is so much more powerful than the evil that once weighed so heavily on me.

A few years ago, I couldn’t imagine being here.

Now I get to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, football seasons, my cat, another September, and all of the little things in between. by @_rileygoode
