I warmly invite you to the opening of Creative Nerd: From Modems to Meme Economy at Kaapelitehdas (Valssaamo), this Friday, 25 September, at 16:00.

I'm contributing a new piece to the exhibition, Tower of Label — a participatory sound installation about who gets heard online. Visitors record a short voice note, which enters and inhabits an ecology of attention shaped by the same hidden logic that decides what rises and what disappears on the internet: commercial value, toxicity and engagement.

Software co-authored with Anthropic's Claude. Concept developed with Tom Kettunen @tomkettunen , whose idea that searches are valued differently is the seed of the commercial-value mechanic.

Meet the artists of the Guarding the Baltic Sea 2026 at the Vartiosaari Artists Open Studios, tomorrow, 30 August 2026 from 11am, on Vartiosaari Island.

#GuardingTheBalticSea #eunicglobal #Vartiosaari #itämeripäivä #artistresidency by @_robertofusco

Welcome to meet the residency artists of Guarding the Baltic Sea 2026 on Sunday 23rd Aug at 16-18!

CAA is looking forward to co-organising this year's edition of the project and co-hosting the kick off event of the programme. In the event the artists will share their artistic practices, research processes, and ongoing work engaged with water bodies. Curators Taru Elfving and Julia Lohmann introduce the programme of the next two weeks consisting of fieldwork on Vartiosaari island in Helsinki and at Tvärminne Zoological Station and Archipelago Research Institute.

Participating artists: Laure Vigna, Mia Tamme, Noora Sandgren, Rasa Weber, Robert Fusco, Weronika Zalewska

Thank you Bioart Society for co-hosting the event at SOLU, Panimokatu 1, Helsinki.

🇫🇮 Helsingissä toimiva mediataiteilija Roberto Fusco tutkii teoksissaan ympäristöhavainnon muodostumista datankeruun, sensorien ja simulaatioiden avulla. Hänen työnsä tekevät näkyväksi sen, miten tietojenkäsittely muokkaa tapaamme kokea maailmaa.

Tieteellistä ja kehollista tietoa yhdistelevässä työskentelyssään Fusco käyttää simulointia luonnonilmiöiden tutkimiseen, kun taas kehollinen lähestymistapa ohjaa teoksia kohti runollisia ja spekulatiivisia skenaarioita.

Aalto-yliopistosta tekniikan tohtoriksi valmistuneen Fuscon teoksia on esitetty vuodesta 2010 alkaen laajasti eri festivaaleilla ja gallerioissa, kuten Ars Electronicassa, LUX Helsingissä, Kuopion taidemuseossa ja New Yorkin Eyebeamissa.

🇬🇧 Roberto Fusco is a media artist based in Helsinki, Finland. Working with custom sensors, data collection, and simulation, his practice explores how observation becomes a form of participation in environmental phenomena — exposing the role of computation as an instrument that mediates perception and experience.

His work navigates the boundary between scientific and embodied modes of knowing, where simulation serves as a method for investigating natural phenomena and the embodied perspective drives that inquiry toward poetic and speculative scenarios.

Fusco holds a Doctor of Science in Technology from Aalto University and his works have been presented widely since 2010 at different festivals and galleries, such as Ars Electronica, LUX Helsinki, Eyebeam New York and Kuopio Art Museum.

More excerpts from HYPOXIA.

Thank you so much @repettisonja and Laura Kauppi from @tvarminnezoologicalstation for your support and inspiring conversations.

The Baltic Sea faces severe ecological degradation, with approximately 25% of its seabed experiencing hypoxic conditions due to extensive eutrophication caused by agricultural runoff and industrial pollution, creating one of the world's largest human-caused "dead zones." This environmental crisis presents a fundamental challenge: how to move beyond abstract data presentation toward embodied, emotional connections with environmental change that can motivate collective action and adaptation.

In the performance Hypoxia, I confront these questions through a computational and material-based audio-visual performance, combining microscopic images, satellite observations, data visualization, 3D reconstruction of the island Örö and AI-generated imagery.
A breathing interface lets me establish a dialogue with the water and its digital transformations.
Part of the materials are elaboration of 2 videos of Rhodomonas marina TVZ60, algal cultures to study the impact of salinity on their life, which is part of the ongoing PhD research of Sonja Repetti, working at the University of Helsinki and the Centre for the Social Study of Microbes.

Data from the Tvärminne marine research field station were kindly provided by Laura Kauppi, Research coordinator at Tvärminne Zoological Station, University of Helsinki.

A couple of weeks ago I presented a new av performance title HYPOXIA as part of the 2nd HiLIFE Science Days 2025 in Helsinki. It was a great experience, with super kind organizers and warm audience.

Thank you so much @repettisonja and Laura Kauppi from @tvarminnezoologicalstation for your support and inspiring conversations.

The wave in the mind. Opening tomorrow at galleria FIKKA in @porvoon_taidehalli with @emmavilina

Welcome!

The Wave In the Mind by artist duo Fusco and Fält continues their work that combines computation, analog and digital technology, with traditional drawing and printing techniques. They have been exploring the physical and expressive properties of the water surface and sand, and in their latest installation, The Wave in the Mind, they are encountering storms from different perspectives. Modern sensor technology provided measured data for the simulation of a storm from 2004, while subjective accounts of the sea state found in ship journals provided means for a speculative reconstruction of a storm from ‘34.
The dark figures hovering in the space are covered with marks of water movement, but they are more subtle and silent than gigantic waves.
The exhibition’s soundscape is composed of drawing sounds on different materials and human voices. These embodied attempts to follow and entrain with the waves use our sensuous bodies, instead of reductively measuring and calculating natural phenomena. by @_robertofusco

Dear All,

I warmly welcome you to the opening of our exhibition:

As an addition to our previous work, the new video "a note by the sea" realized in collaboration with @marek.pluciennik presents a speculative reconstruction of a storm encountered by the sailing vessel Pommern on March 5th, 1934. Drawing from historical ship log annotations, physics-based environmental simulations, and contemporary generative tools such as OpenAI’s Sora, the piece explores how past maritime events can be reimagined through machine-assisted interpretation. The traditional Japanese suminagashi marbling process is echoed in the surface textures, where ink-like patterns dissolve and expand, forming the skin of an imagined ocean — a space between historical memory and poetic abstraction. Rather than seeking accuracy, the image embraces abstraction and analog film aesthetics to evoke the sensory and emotional experience of the storm. The visual grain, instability, and turbulence simulate both the unpredictability of the sea and the fragility of memory, positioning the reconstruction somewhere between archival record, hallucination, and poetic re-invention.

Roberto Fusco (@_robertofusco) is an Italian media artist based in Helsinki. At the intersection of physical and computational processes, his artistic research focuses on the possible dialogues between art and science. By using data, his works navigate between scientific, objective depictions of phenomena and subjective, felt experiences. By combining material and digital elements, Fusco creates hybrid forms that reveal the ongoing negotiation with technology and underscore the complexity and unpredictability of the material world beyond what is computable.

🟡 Join us Feb 22-23 at the Ambient Stage for a series of sound works that deal with themes relating to colonialism, the climate crisis, conflict and identity.
