Our lives have been changed in 24 hours. After Rupert feeling unwell yesterday, it turned out he had fluid on his heart, in his chest and abdomen and after tests and a CT, it unfortunately came back as the worst thing you can hear - he had hermangiosarcoma (cancer of the liver, spleen and heart). The vet said it could be days or weeks for him so with a heavy heart we knew the only decision was to let Rupert pass over the rainbow bridge as peacefully as he could.

Taken far too young from us at 9 years old but what a privilege it was to be your parents. Thank you for choosing us in 2017 to be your Mum and Dad. We could not be luckier that you were our dog, our soul dog. No words can describe what you meant and still mean to us. Anyone who met you commented on how lovely, gentle, kind, patient and beautiful you were. A true beautiful grey inside and out.

It’s still very raw and we’re sure not a day will go by we won’t miss your paw prints, the jingle jangle of your collar, you getting over excited at squirrels, greeting us at the door, doing little jumps for going “out” (walkies), giving us the puppy dog eyes everytime we ate something mildly interesting, waiting patiently when we got the ice cube tray out for your ice cube to crunch on and absolutely making a water feature in the kitchen everytime you drank.

Until we meet again over the rainbow bridge our beautiful boy, we love you so much. Hope you get to chase so many squirrels and foxes up there. Rest easy Rupert, Rupes, Rupey-poops.

💗 Rupert’s Mum here: Well, where do I start? I’ve spent the last week visiting and (where I can) helping out at 112 Carlota Galgos in Andalusia, Spain. A non profit association which works for the protection of galgos. My week involved meeting all of the wonderful dogs, numerous visits to the vet for injured galgos, helping clean and feed, collecting a galgo from a galguero that was due to be killed, and meeting the wonderful Charlotte Del Rio and her family who is behind this incredible work. They rescue, rehabilitate, heal the soul and rehome these beautiful animals. It was an absolute honour to be able to be welcomed into this world where there is a glimmer of hope for the nice people in the world wanting a change for the good of these animals. The way these dogs come into the finca and the way they are previously treated is horrific - please do search for galgo hunting if you want to read more. Their spirit is strong and although they might not all understand it yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel and they will find their place at 112 Carlota Galgos. They will be shown true respect, love and kindness for that’s all they need. Charlotte is an amazing angel who has been put on this Earth to help these animals and I will be a lifetime supporter and I can’t thank her and her family enough for all they do every single day to keep this going. World Galgo Day 💔 1st February every year marks the end of the hunting season where tens of thousands of galgos are killed and tortured. Galgos aren’t protected by law and are passed off as “working animals” so are discarded like spare parts when done with. Thank you to all the organisations out there who protect these beautiful creatures, special shout out to @112carlotagalgos 🩷🩷 without you, where would all these souls be. #worldgalgoday #diadelgalgo by @_rupertandralph

Today would’ve been your 8th gotcha day 🥹 Rehoming you still is and always will be, the best decision we ever made. We’re so grateful you picked us to be your parents, we knew at the time how lucky we were but now we realise we truly hit the jackpot with you. We would give anything to go back to the way things were. The bestest boy there ever was, Rupert. ❤️
