Inspired by her current exhibition Twig Pools, this workshop will introduce you to some of the artist’s favoured materials, and invite you to try your hand at playful intuitive sculpture and experiment with documenting ephemeral artworks. Materials provided.

tidal range,2026

I developed this new work, tidal range, with support from the Artist Award from @artwalkprojects, which allowed me to explore some new ideas that link my art practice with my experience of managing my chronic health condition, type 1 diabetes. The installation speaks to the relentlessness of managing my diabetes 24 hours a day, and the repeating patterns and habits that help keep me alive. Each day, all day, I see these drawn lines made by my body via my blood glucose monitor, which evoke lapping tides and changing coastlines.

tidal range is a durational piece that will change over the time it is installed, perhaps stretching or even snapping. This is part of the work that reflects the ever-changing, unpredictable nature of diabetes, as well as the constant flux state of outer coastal landscapes and inner emotional landscapes.

‘tidal range’ by artist Sally Price now installed at Portobello Bookshop.

Sally is one of two artists who has received an Award from @artwalkweekends to develop a body of work inspired by this year’s title of ‘Shift and Flow’.

Based in Edinburgh, Sally is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work is driven by an immersive, generative process and a fascination with tactility and viscerality. Her current practice is informed by mental and physical health experiences as well as the natural landscape. Through exploration of material possibility and repetition she considers control, relinquishment, the ordered, the organic and the incidental.

‘tidal range’ explores notions of tension, catharsis, weight, repetition and flow that are core to her practice, drawing on the natural Scottish landscape as well as inner emotional and physical landscapes. The repeating line is taken from the blood sugar data charts recorded daily that help manage her chronic condition; a drawing produced by her body every day that echoes the flow of water, patterns found in sand, and undulating horizons, as well as the mental peaks and troughs experienced managing a disability. ‘tidal range’ connects body, mind, land and sea, interweaving the constant flux of each.

Detail shot of ‘five falls, some reflecting’ (2026). Fun fact: two of these pieces are recycled from my Spaces Left By Storms installations at Kelburn Garden Party in 2025, so they have marks and patina from being laid in the mud for over a week at a festival. I like to think of them as ‘land dyed’, though some might just think they’re a bit dirty.

If you visit the exhibition see if you can tell which two spent time in the mud.

One of the four new twig pools made for the exhibition, adding to the original collection of five to bring the total up to nine so far. I love making these- from finding each unique branch to selecting the right rope or ribbon to compliment it to arranging and rearranging the layers, every step is so satisfying.

The first couple of weeks of Twig Pools have been truly magical, thanks to everyone who has been to see it so far and shared kind words.

The exhibition is on until 13th September so there’s still plenty of time to see it in the Lab Gallery at Summerhall.

My phone is filled with an unreasonable amount of photos of the work so I will try to actually share some of them, starting here with a shot of ‘five falls, some reflecting’, one of the site-specific installations.

‘Twig Pools’ is now open in the Lab Gallery upstairs at @summerhallarts until 13th September. I’m really proud of it, go and take a look if you can, and check out the other wonderful exhibitions and commissions which also opened last night. It’s a real privilege to be a part of this year’s Summerhall visual arts programme.

My first solo exhibition, Twig Pools, opens at the end of this week at Summerhall and will be on 25 July to 13 September, so please go and take a look around if you can. I’m really proud of the work and I’m so excited to share it.

Unsurprisingly it contains a lot of rope 〰️〰️〰️~~~~〰️〰️〰️〰️~~~~~~~~~~~〰️〰️〰️〰️ but also other things as well.
