My mother died yesterday at 66 years old.
She was diagnosed with cancer in July, began treatment, and within a matter of months we suddenly had to say goodbye. I wish I had more time with her. I wish I had more time to ask her questions about her life, but by the end she was suffering tremendously, and she was ready to go. She wasn’t afraid of dying. She just didn’t want to suffer anymore. My mother was a professional mother. She had been a nanny since she was a teenager and worked until the last days of her life. She raised my brother and me, raised two other children as a nanny, and then helped raise their children. In the last few days, there wasn’t much opportunity for profound conversations or last words like there are in movies. Mostly, I just wanted her to be comfortable. When she finally was comfortable enough to talk, I told her that I was grateful to her for bringing me into this life, for teaching me how to love, and for teaching me to see the beauty in everything and everyone. At one point, with my mother on her deathbed, my dad was doing what he always does, trying to lighten the mood. He said my scraggly facial hair made me look like an old gunslinging cowboy from one of the Westerns he loves. My mom, barely able to speak, quietly said, “But he’s a good cowboy.” I’ve never identified as a cowboy (and probably never will). It was such a small thing, but it meant everything to me. She had spent her life raising children to be good people. Hearing her call me good felt like her telling me that I had turned out okay. The last night I saw her conscious, I told her that everything is always good in the end. I didn’t say goodbye. I told her, “I’ll see you later”. But I’m so grateful I got to be her son. I’m grateful that when the time came, she was able to make her own decision. I’m grateful she wasn’t afraid. And I’m grateful for everything she gave me while she was here. I think whenever I see the wind moving through the trees, I’ll see her there too. And just like the working gal she was, after a lifetime of working and taking care of everybody else, my mother died at 5 p.m. on a Friday. Her shift was finally over. I love you, Mom.

From seed to harvest. A season of tending, waiting, and working the land. A small look at all the hands and time behind the final flower.

Grateful to the farmers who welcomed us onto their land and let us document their work 🙏💚 by @_samfrank

One of the people I was most grateful to meet during my most recent trip to Humboldt was Sue Moloney.

Sue has spent decades advocating for the protection of old-growth redwoods and for the communities that have grown alongside them. We made these photographs in the redwood grove across the road from where centuries-old trees were recently cut down, an event that sparked outrage and protest within the local community.

As we wandered beneath the canopy, Sue taught me about the forest, her years of working to protect it, and the deep connection so many people in Humboldt have to these ancient trees. At one point she stopped to point out a patch of rare redwood lilies growing on the forest floor. It was a reminder that these forests aren’t just made up of the giants overhead but full of life and details that are easy to miss until someone takes the time to show you.

I’m grateful for the afternoon we shared and for people like Sue, whose care and commitment help ensure these remarkable places endure for generations to come.

There’s a great @sfchronicle article about the tree removal at the property if you’re interested in learning more.

The rivers became part of the routine.

After working mornings at the farm, I’d make my way down to the river to wash off, cool down, and let the day slow down. I started bringing my camera with me, photographing the people I met there and the landscape that kept drawing each of us back.

Looking forward to returning and continuing to photograph these rivers and the people who gather along them.
