As part of HALLENKUNST Chemnitz, I’m leaving the realm of painting with the new series “SHELTER” in order to open up a new space for expression. Found objects (objets trouvés) from public spaces or abandoned environments are transformed in scale (1:35) and material and form as a monochrome, three-dimensional composition a staged reality in a miniature world of their own. By decontextualizing the found objects, I’m deliberately playing with opposites: Destruction and creation, chaos and order, reality and fiction. These dioramas not only refer to the original beauty of these places, but also show the fragility and transience of urban structures in an unusual staging, which is documented in this new book and revealed through many detail shots.

The work 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝟬𝟭_𝟮𝟰 is my first diorama in the context of a video installation, built exclusively for an ongoing exhibition in Italy @inmyname.abovetheshow
To visualize the dialogue between reality and fiction, this step is a logical extension of my artistic language.
With the great support of @made_514 , suitable objects were selected in abandoned spots at the beginning of this year and collected for the installation.
These found objects served as references for the reproduction in 1:35 scale.
Apart from the 3D printed Monobloc and the VW Beetle model kit, which I had to frankenstein a lot, all other objects are scratch built from polystyrene and no 3D renderings were used for the SHELTER video.
More fotos and infos the next days.

The diorama by Rafael Gerlach is the beginning of a new series of works entitled “Shelter”.
Known for his abstract formal language, he is now exploring plasticity in his collage-like approach and in this way creating new territory filled with representational objects. Objects found in public space (objets trouvé) are transformed in scale and material and form a new kind of reality as a staged composition. If his murals in public space engage in a dialog with their surroundings, in the diorama this dialog is concentrated inwards and involves the viewers who enter this stage. In this way, a fictitious and unknown landscape is created in the exhibition space that immediately awakens memories of the familiar, creating an atmosphere that competes with the reality of the world through materiality, scale and the depiction of transience and is not free of contradictions.
