Finding New Life in Deadstock Fabric ♻️
👗 Sharing Tips & Educating on Eco-Friendly Sewing Practices ✂️
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
5,320 POUNDS saved. 🧵♻️ Looking back at 2025, I’m genuinely humbled by what we accomplished together.

That’s over 5,000 lbs of fabric lugged in a rolling cart, folded by hand, and sent off to Sewing Nerds who gave ‘em a new life 💪✨
Our top fabrics—“In the Card” 🃏 & “I’ll Pop Your Art” 💋—perfectly captured the fun, free-spirited energy of this community, even through a year that threw everything at us.

Moved studios twice, survived the chaos—and still shipped nearly 4,000 orders 🥹😭 As a husband-and-wife team, every order kept our tiny studio humming (powered by grit, giggles, and way too much coffee ☕️). We’re beyond grateful for your support.
I’m still learning, still growing, and so thankful for your patience as we figure things out along the way 💓

From yelling at loggers in Camas, WA as a kid to upcycling deadstock in LA—my love for Mother Nature and fashion has always gone hand in hand ♻️🌿

Can you help me save 6,000 lbs by the end of the year? 🌎

It’s been an entire year since the big box fabric store closed down. Fabric shopping has looked a little different for many across the 🇺🇸. When the news broke, the first thing I said was ‘time to shop from small fabric stores’. Mine specializes in deadstock fabric ♻️. This is leftover fabric the fashion industry discards. Maybe a brand ordered too much, the season changed or the dye job is darker than expected. Instead of letting these fabrics go to waste, they get to inspire your next sewing project. And because I love sewing and fabric so much, I’ve curated a growing list of indie fabric stores to shop from in all 50 states. Plus when you shop small, you’re investing in someone’s dreams and not lining the pockets of corporate greed and private equity firms that have no connection to the sewing community. If you have a fabric store in your area that’s not in the list— drop them in the comments below!👇 by @_sewbysew_

Feeling incredibly honored and over the moon today! 🌍💚 I’ve just been featured by @spectrumnews1socal , highlighting our heartfelt mission at Sew by Sew to shake up the fashion industry’s status quo—aiming to drastically cut down on textile waste by finding a new purpose for deadstock fabrics. Every piece we find carries a story, a journey from being overlooked to becoming treasured, all while supporting local small businesses and fueling the passion of hobby sewists and DIY enthusiasts like you.

In sharing this journey with Jo Kwon of Spectrum News, it’s been an opportunity not just to spotlight our efforts, but to celebrate our collective commitment to sustainability. On this very special Earth Day, it feels like our message is resonating louder and broader, inspiring others to join us in reimagining what fashion can be when we put our planet first. We’re honored to share the spotlight with @imwiththeband , a badass brand on a mission to bring Deadstock fabrics back to life.

At Sew by Sew, we’re more than just a brand; we’re a community, united in our belief that every small action contributes to a larger change. By choosing deadstock fabrics, you’re not just crafting something beautiful; you’re making a statement, taking a stand, and actively participating in a movement towards a more sustainable and environmentally respectful fashion industry.

So, as we revel in the glow of today’s feature and the shared journey it represents, I turn the spotlight to you, our incredible community. What steps are you taking this Earth Day to make a difference? Whether it’s upcycling old clothes, advocating for sustainable practices in your community, or simply choosing to support eco-friendly brands, every action counts. Let’s use this moment to share, inspire, and motivate each other towards greater environmental stewardship.

I love spooky season but I don’t love all pumpkins all the time.

If you want to sprinkle a little Halloween spirit into your next sewing project without looking like a cheesy Halloween store. Then these fabrics are for you!

From left to eight we got:
🃏 In the Cards- cotton/spandex sateen
⭐️ Virgo- cotton/spandex jersey
👄 Love Bite- Quilt quality poplin
🌕 Honey Mustard- rayon/spandex rib knit (with amazing stretch and recovery especially if you’re feeling bloated from too many PSLs)
🌌 I See My Sign- cotton/spandex sateen

All natural based fibers that are less scary on your skin, and by sewing them you’re bringing deadstock fabrics back to life.

I’m curious what you would sew in these. Drop your design ideas in the comments. 💀 💕 by @_sewbysew_

You’ve mended the broken seams, replaced the buttons and zipper. The piece you’ve worn 100 times. ✨This is the most sustainable garment in your closet. ✨The one you’ve worn the longest.

That’s what’s rad about making your own clothes. You get to decide how long they live. You pick the fabric. You take your time. You make the fit right so you’ll actually love wearing it. 💕

And when something wears out—you fix it! Because you know how much went into making it.

Bonus points— when you sew it from deadstock or 2nd-hand materials, your sewing project makes a difference by using what someone else considered waste. Keeping textiles from heading to the landfill. Sew it. Wear it, again and again. ♻️

I’m curious—what’s the one thing you’ve made and worn the most? Share in the comments 👇 by @_sewbysew_

If you have a shop dedicated to sustainability— let’s be friends! Last Monday, I treated myself to a solo date in Venice, CA, and discovered @circularlibrary . A boutique that’s dedicated to supporting sustainable fashion and teaching the community how to DIY their wardrobe to help reduce textile waste. And I got to meet their pop-up designer all the way from Florida, @the_sonder_atelier Jounte create these gorgeous, delicate paintings on vintage slips, dresses, and second-hand clothes. If you’re in town this weekend, you can meet the designer and enjoy some matcha✨. I love that they offer workshops too! Maybe we can do one together!

Do you have a small, sustainable boutique in your town that hosts creative events? Tag them in the comments below! Maybe a fellow local Sewing Nerd can support them too 🤓🧵✨ by @_sewbysew_

I’m working on doing more pop-ups in the future (until we get our own brick and mortar—that would be cool huh?! Baby steps,, baby!). My mom turned 73 on the 21st. ✨🎂 This full-time creative, free-spirited, badass lady is the one who taught me how to sew and always encourages my creativity.

I wanted to share a few of my favorite outfits because she’s the coolest chick I know.

It’s her fault that I dive into piles of textiles. Growing up, we would go to a fabric-by-the-pound shop, and she’d toss me onto a pile to pick out fabric for my next outfit. Not much has changed today 😂. She involved me in every step of the sewing process before I took to the machine on my own when I was 8.

Her advice for everyone: “Be weird. Be kind. Take no sh*t!”

She’s lived many lives as a florist, ultrasound tech, photographer, and storm chaser 🌪️✨

How could I not want to celebrate you, Mama!

I’m curious who taught YOU how to sew! Share your story in the comments💕 by @_sewbysew_
