Story time:

I use to hate celebrating diwali starting in 2nd grade. But not because I actually hated the holiday. I loved it but my mom use to make me wear traditional clothes to school and I felt embarrassed. I don’t remember much from second grade but what I do remember is that feeling I had or the hurt I felt. Walking in late to class because I had thrown a tantrum going to school that day in my choli. Everyone stared at me and instead of embracing my culture they made fun of me. I was scared to even tell the teacher. And the whole day I sat there wanting to cry and go home but instead tolerated the bullying. It sucked. I went to school where I was a minority.

Ever since that day Diwali was so tough for me to celebrate. Diwali, something that’s suppose to bring light into someone’s life brought darkness for me.

It took me a long time to realize Diwali is a part of my culture it’s apart of who I am. To grow that thick skin again to not care what others think. I reclaim my light that was taken from me for being different.

I made a promise to myself that I would never let someone dim my light or blow it out. I deserve that light. It makes me so happy when I see states declaring Diwali a holiday or seeing the kids today have what I didn’t, respect for being different and their culture. Thank you for healing my inner child. Today I love celebrating Diwali. 🪔🎆🎇

Sooooo let me tell you how I use to h*** getting tan in the summer like did not like it at all. I use to sit there and rub ice on myself or rub milk and chickpea flour (iykyk). I realized it wasn’t me who didn’t like getting dark it was society and stereotypes. Oh if you get dark you won’t look good or if you get dark no one will marry you, meanwhile my 10 year old a** just wanted to play. For the longest time I wouldn’t go out or put myself thru itchy methods of getting light.

Sooo basically I became a “rebel” child and love getting dark. So basically I realized my skin color or anything about my appearance is completely irrelevant to anything and anyone.

But the kind of person I am deep down inside is what truly matters. So girl go out and be in the sun who the ef cares. Let’s stop letting society tell us how to live our lives.
