StartX has been named a top 10 accelerator on TIME’s America’s Best Incubators & Accelerators 2026 list.

TIME partnered with Statista on a multi-stage process — open applications, alumni feedback, track record analysis, and expert recommendations — to identify the top 80 programs supporting founders across the U.S. this year.

Part of that process draws on the founders who’ve come through StartX. This recognition is theirs as much as ours. We’re grateful for this community, and even more excited for the ones still to come.

Our commitment back: we’ll keep building this community and backing founders at 0% equity.

The accelerator behind unicorns like DoorDash, Patreon, and OpenSea? That’s us!

10 weeks of mentorship and resources. A community that sticks around way longer than that.

And the best part? We’ve never taken a single share of equity.

Most accelerators take a piece of your company. We never have.

This shapes the kind of advice you get, the mentors you work with, and the community you’re part of long after your 10 weeks are up.

Link in bio if you want to see what that looks like for you.

One week until applications close for Spring 2027! If you're holding off because you're not sure your stage fits, here's your answer.

You're probably not too early or too late. StartX is stage agnostic, taking companies from pre-seed to growth, and industry agnostic too, so there's no specific lane you need to fit into.

In fact, your idea isn't even what gets judged. Your idea is mainly a lens for understanding how well you know your industry and your competitors. What actually matters is your commitment to the problem, how your team works together, and whether you can execute on what you say you will.

By the time Karl Mehta set out to build TrustModel AI, he'd already founded three venture-backed companies over 25 years in Silicon Valley. He wanted this one to be more structured and deliberate, guided by people who knew more than he did. That's what brought him back to StartX.

That's a different ask than what a first-time founder usually needs. Early on, most of the help is foundational: how to structure a team, how to think about pitching, how to avoid common early mistakes. By a third or fourth company, a founder has usually worked through that already. What's harder to find is speed, someone at your own level who can unblock a specific, narrow problem fast, instead of generic advice you've heard before.

That's closer to what StartX actually builds around each founder. Rather than one curriculum everyone moves through the same way, support comes through peer input, mentors, and an expert network, matched to what a specific founder needs, so it can flex for someone on their fourth company as much as their first.

That system runs on scale. A community of 3,000+ founders and alumni companies worth $200B+ combined, including 29 unicorns, means there's a real chance someone's already solved the exact problem in front of you.

Jesse Chang built his company through StartX's Student in Residence (SIR) program, a part-time path for Stanford students who aren't building full-time yet. In the Summer 2026 cohort, he used it to hit a run of milestones and close a fundraise.

The program is designed to get you ready for the full-time StartX program down the line, so the ground you cover as a student carries forward instead of starting over.

It comes with real structure built around a school schedule: neighborhoods, the same peer group that meets every other week, a fundraising sprint, and a pitch competition built just for this track. The application and interview process mirrors the full-time program, with judges factoring in that school comes first. Once you go on to complete the full-time program, StartX access is for life.

What Jesse points to most is the people. He describes just being on the patio and having someone who happens to be an expert in a specific technical problem show up, ready to help, because the mentor network makes time for founders like that.

That's what a close-knit community of 3,000+ founders makes possible: expertise that's often just a conversation away, whether you're a student or years into building.

Most startups can get a product in front of customers fairly quickly, and early sales become the proof point for the next raise.

Biotech doesn't work that way. Ivan Dimov, who built Orca Bio through StartX, describes the path for a new therapy as going from an idea, to the lab, to a company, through Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials, to approval, and only then to patients at scale. Revenue comes at the very end.

So progress is measured differently. Along that regulatory pathway sit value inflection points: milestones investors and the industry recognize as real progress. Founders who understand them early can build their team, strategy and fundraising around them from the start.

StartX is built to support that. Support is tailored to each industry, and for biotech founders that includes:
→ Dedicated wet and dry lab space through the StartX lab co-op
→ Expert advisors
→ A clearer read on which investors are the right fit
→ Talks from founders who are six months or ten years further down the same road

Ivan has seen it work firsthand. Orca Bio, which he co-founded out of Stanford research, recently received FDA approval for its first-in-class cell therapy and has been valued at over $1B.

StartX is a nonprofit, Stanford-affiliated accelerator that takes 0% equity.

What you need from a founder community changes with every company you build.

Nick Damiano built three companies through StartX, and his role in the community shifted each time. So did what he got out of it.

The first time, you're soaking up everything. By your third, you've solved a lot of the early problems before. What's harder to find is someone close enough to your company to spot what you can't see from the inside.

That's by design. Every founder goes through the same core structure, but what you get out of it is shaped around where your company is right now.

→ 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 start with 1-1 mentorship and seminars on the topics affecting them most, plus a fundraising coach and a Board of Advisors to practice with before they have a board of their own.

→ 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 get a more advanced program, customized each time they come back. That includes a peer group of experienced founders at the same stage, and access to industry and domain experts when they need a specific answer fast.

Either way, you're building alongside founders at every other stage too. Every company also gets $1M+ in resources, drop-in office space and legal support, and once the 10 weeks end, the community stays with you for life.

StartX is a nonprofit, Stanford-affiliated accelerator that takes 0% equity, with a trusted community that opens doors across the Stanford network. First company or fifth, it's built to meet you where you are.

Reapplying to StartX isn't resubmitting the same form with a new date on it. It's showing what's changed.

Two things most reapplicants overlook, per StartX's own admissions notes:

𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱. More traction, a different team, a clearer direction, or a better understanding of what you're building all count. State it directly instead of leaving it to be inferred.

𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀. ""We've grown"" isn't a data point. A specific number or milestone, and what you did to hit it, is.

The fundamentals reviewers check don't change between cycles: full-time commitment, team dynamics, and evidence you execute. What changes is that you now have another cycle of progress to show against them.

Every applicant, accepted or not, gets feedback from the StartX team. The strongest reapplications are usually the ones that show what a founder did with that feedback.

What you'd be reapplying into: a community of 3,000+ founders, 150+ events a year, and alumni companies worth $200B+ combined, including 29 unicorns.

Capella Kerst, Ph.D. is building in material sciences and deep tech. When she has a niche technical question, she posts it to her group of CEOs and mentors. Within 24 hours, she has an answer, usually more than one, from people who've hit the same problem before.

Two things make that worth building into how you work, wherever you get it from:

𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀. In material sciences, decisions are locked in early: materials, tooling and manufacturing choices compound, and a flaw that looks fine to one engineer can be invisible until someone with a different specialty looks at it. Few advisors have full expertise across product development, manufacturing and business, so one read on a problem carries more risk than it would in software.

𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲. A software bug shows up the same day you test it. A wrong call on materials or design can take weeks to surface in material sciences, by which point changing direction is expensive. A same-day read on a decision is what keeps a build moving instead of stalling on it for weeks.

Capella gets both inside a group StartX puts together for material sciences, deep tech, semiconductor and robotics founders: several people, on hand, who've already built in the space. That group sits inside a wider community of 3,000+ founders and 150+ events a year, where more than half of any cohort are repeat founders, industry experts or professors, so the odds are good someone's already been through your exact problem.

"Nick Damiano was on his second company, still early in his founder journey, when his advisors told him no one would invest. He went into fundraising believing that, and it showed.

What changed it was a founder on his StartX board. He reframed the whole approach: stop treating fundraising like an evaluation, where you present and someone else decides, and start treating it like what it is, an exchange where the investor needs a good deal as much as you need the capital.

That reframing in posture altered how the room read him. Going in with that mindset shifted the negotiation before a single term was discussed, and in Nick's words, it ""changed the game"" for the raise.

That kind of exchange is what StartX is built around. The Board of Advisors gives every founder a practice version of it: 3 assigned advisors and a 4th seat you choose yourself, so you've had the harder conversations before a real board asks them. And it doesn't stop there: neighborhoods, the same peer group meeting every other week, mean there's always someone to reality-check a decision with, inside a community of 3,000+ founders who've faced the same rooms.
